Fitchburg runs over Brockton
By Chris Forsberg Globe Correspondent, 10/7/2000
Using its ball-control offense, Fitchburg pounded away at Brockton to dominate the first half and hold off the second-ranked Boxers, 28-14, last night at Marciano Stadium. Fitchburg (5-0) took its opening drive the length of the field, consuming nine minutes on 16 plays before Frank McDonald plunged in from a yard out. After stopping a potential Boxers scoring drive, Fitchburg's backfield went to work again, driving 80 yards before Jason Twomley pushed the lead to 14-0 with another 1-yard score. The Boxers (4-1) were able to cut the lead in half on a 65-yard reverse by Robert Whitaker with just under three minutes left in the half. But McDonald answered with his second 1-yard touchdown run of the game to give Fitchburg a 21-7 halftime lead. Overall, Fitchburg held the ball for 18 minutes in the first half. Michael Kershaw pulled the Boxers to within a touchdown with a 19-yard scoring pass to Pat Emmanuel in the third quarter, but Fitchburg put the finishing touches on the win with a 4-yard scoring jaunt by Norman Cole in the fourth quarter. Twomley finished with 96 yards on 19 carries. Whitaker caught four passes for 65 yards and had 130 yards of total offense for Brockton.
