Introduction to York52 majordomo mailing list

What does a mailing list do?

A mailing list is a mechanism which allows any member of the list to send email to all the other members using a single email address. For the York52 majordomo mailing list that address is: "york_fifty_two@employees.org" The mailing list refuses to distribute all messages submitted by non-members of the list.

How does a mailing list work and what is majordomo?

One computer in the Internet, in this case willers.employees.org, is running a program called "majordomo". This program manages however many mailing lists as are set up on it. I have access to this computer. I have setup York52 on majordomo on willers.employees.org. The computer running 24 hours a day accepts any email addressed as above and checks to see if the sender is a member of the list. If the sender is a member, majordomo adds "York52:" to the Subject line and immediately forwards the message to all members.

How does one subscribe?

To subscribe, send an email to: majordomo@employees.org With the following in the BODY of the message "subscribe york_fifty_two your_email_address" For example when I subscribed I wrote: --------------snip-------- To:majordomo@employees.org Cc: Subject: subscribe york_fifty_two kjones@ziplink.net ----------end snip-------- A word of warning. majordomo is expecting straight text messages, not .html format, not .doc format. Just simple text. You may have to reconfigure your mailer when sending commands to majordomo.

What happens then?

You will receive an email directly from majordomo telling you that you are a new member. To learn more at that time send another email to majordomo@employees.org with only the word "help" in the first line of the BODY.

How does one unsubscribe?

Send an email to majordomo@employees.org With the following in the BODY of the message: "unsubscribe york_fifty_two your_email_address"

Try it, you'll like it:-)
