Red Raiders Blank Hawks
Staff Report
MILFORD -- The Fitchburg High football team did something
that Leominster was unable to do last week, it shut out
Milford, 20-0, Friday night at Milford high School.
The Red Raiders (5-2, 4-1) streaked to their second straight
win behind its defense and the combined running exploits of
William Earley and Matt Donovan, who combined for over 250
yards of offense.
Fitchburg's defense, led by Steve Marrella also rose to the
occasion, limiting the punch less Scarlet Hawks (1-6) to a
single drive deep into FHS territory as time ran out in
the first half. At the half, however, the Red Raiders led
just 6-0 on a 3-yard second quarter TD run by Donovan, and
thanks to a pair of solid goal line stops against Fitchburg
by the Milford defense, the score remained that way until
the fourth quarter.
That's when the Raiders exploded for 14 unanswered points to
put the game away. Starting from his own 18, FHS senior
quarterback Ryan Logan -- returning to action after
suffering an injury last week -- led an efficient 82-yard
strike that was kept alive by an 11-yard pass to Matt
Vierra on third and long. Logan capped the drive with a eight
yard pass to Donovan in the end zone.
On their next possession, the Raiders struck for paydirt on
Earley's 35-yard scamper, folled by Logan's completed pass
to Jeff Smart for the 2-point conversion.
