Background and other Drama:
Anna Maria Velasquez is from the Chilean Andes. Her family works hard on their wool ranch (sheep, alpaca and llamas). The family has finally accumulated enough money to start sending their children off to school, and Anna got sent to Universidad Técnica del Estado, the State Technical University in Santiago. Missing her brother Carlos terribly she tinkered incessently on gadgets, widgets, and engines of all types, just like she did with Carlos. She got some interesting ideas. Because she told few people, nobody told her they wouldn't work, so she built them. She studied chemistry to learn better ways to treat and dye wool.
She worked in a fireworks making sweat shop in her remaining time, to help conserve the meager funds her family tried to send her. A small explosion burned down a section of the factory, leaving her a bit burned and rather shaken. Rather than taking the blame (intern = scapegoat) she discovered that one of the foremen had been using odd ingredients in the fireworks and storing as yet unidentified materials in with factory waste. The foreman was fired quietly, but he blustered at the owners until they brought Anna forward to speak. The foreman turned several shades darker and his eyebrows overlapped as he raised a shaking finger at Anna "You will regret this!" and stalked out, breaking the door as he slammed it.
While recovering from her burns and shock she had a stroke of genius. Her dreams of streaking through the sky just above the treetops down the highmountains to the rich cities were mapped into wings. Beautiful strong wings. She finished her education with honors and returned home to her family, glowing with excitement. The family wool business prospered. Anna continued to make rockets. Adding in the knowledge gained from her flights, she was able to make rockets travel in patterns, and they sold well. This augmented the family income but also gained grumblings from the company where Anna used to make fireworks, although they had far greater quantity and wider markets.
The railway nearest her village was the great rail that ran from Santiago, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina, passing by Christ of the Andes in Uspallata pass on the Argentinian border and Mount Aconcagua on the Peruvian border. She and her brother Carlos visited the mount often. Carlos would light off a rocket and watch Anna race skyward with the wings, hoping to be as beautiful and free, hoping to beat the rocket.
During a trip to sell rockets and deliver wool in town Carlos noticed several men watching him, but was too nervous to ask if they wanted to order wool, there was something creepy about them. Carlos rushed through the wool deliveries and decided not to stick around to sell rockets. On his return to the farm, Carlos was attacked by several men and beaten severely. He managed to light off the rockets, burning one of the men and delaying what would surely have been a painful end. Anna was aloft watching for Carlos' return, and saw the rockets go off. Rushing over to make sure her brother had not had an accident with the rockets, Anna saw Carlos' plight. Screaming for them to leave her brother alone, Anna swooped in on the attackers. They broke and ran, which probably saved both Carlos and Anna. Asking around, Anna discovered that the men were probably working for the foreman that she had gotten fired.
Infuriated, Anna tracked down where the attackers had gone. Anna demanded police go there (she was hoping they'd be arrested for attempted murder, the police were probably hoping to ask a few questions and convince the men that murder would be bad for the town's business and let things go at that). The location turned out to be a branch of an Argentinian based company. The company managers were scrupulously polite but obviously displeased to have official involvement in what was surely a matter that had nothing to do with such a respectable and prosperous company.
Although nothing as blatant happened in town or on the farm a sense of foreboding could not be shaken. Anna resolved to prevent further harm to Carlos or the rest of her family. Anna practiced dodging and catching rockets that Carlos fired, to be ready if another attack was intended. Feeling that everyone would be safer if she were not around to draw further animosity, particularly since neither the local authorities, the former foreman, nor the Argentinian company (and its backers) have not forgotten her and given that the family ranch is perilously close to the Argentinian border by modern transportation, Anna resolved to leave the ranch see what good could come from her new talents.

Aguila: Castilian by birth, Spain sometimes acknowledges this mutant superhero. Aguila is a master of aerial combat, capable of achieving high speeds with his natural wings. However, he tends to go a little overboard around women, and the universe seems to go out of it's way to embarass him. Recently, he tragically lost his wings, but discovered than some of his abilities came from a latent mastery of sky effects. Player: Brad Haga
Capsica: "Exited Woman" has blood of pure capsicim, a controlled reptilian mutation, and the ability to burn more endurance in a minute than the entire Boston marathon. A powerful martial artist, Capsica joined UNIT for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was to keep away from Mexico's "official" superhero...whoever he is this year. Player: James Dunson. |
Ceph: The oldest member of UNIT-M. Ceph was interred as a mummy with his Pharoh several thousand years ago. When the tomb was descecrated, the mystical energies which reanimated him also rekindled his own mutant teleportational powers. Ceph has not attained a full understanding of the modern era, nor has his free will entirely returned. He is protecting Egypt, as he was commanded to do. Player: Eric Pawtowski.
Clifton Force: The greatest source of blunt force in UNIT-M, and the group's mechanical savant. Cliff operated in the Shennendoah Valley of Virginia, but joined the UN when the pickings became too thin. Cliff's genius is in metalurgy, which allowed him to produce the blacksmith-oriented battlesuit he now wears. Player: Daniel Pawtowski.
Cloudburst: The most public of Atlantis' metahumans, this diplomat's daughter joined Unit after being grafted to a mystical bracelet which geives her mastery over water and precipitation. She is hunted by Vortex, who bears a similar bracelet which controls wind, air, & evaporation. Typically, Vortex believes that Aguila owns Cloudburst's bracelet... Player: Christy Galletta
Cubist: National superhero of the African nation of Togo. Jewel embedded in his chest projects a powerful exoskeletal forcefield and allows him to project beams of kinetic force. He also a number of "Order" based effects, and is a master artist in his free time. Cubist has assumed field command duties within UNIT-M. Player: Mark Haymaker.
Fantasia: This Russian-born mistress of illusion is on the run from both anti-psionic groups _and_ secret government agencies in her homeland who want to re-enslave her. She is also developing a capable telepathic talent, and is looking for someone to share her life with. Player: Christy Galletta
Fury: Joined UNIT-M to pay for a replacement duraloy sword. This Scottish giantess' powers have been handed down through her family since the time of the Crusades. With the strength of a hundred men, the toughness of the hardest armor, flight, and her flaming sword, Fury is as dangerous as she is attractive. Player: Allie Homan.
Kailas: A man of rock, and sometimes just as dense, Kailas finds the earth to be more his home than the air above it. Strangely enough, he managed to master a variety of esoteric arts while traveling in Tibet. He is ostensibly a US citizen, but he feels he is representing the oppressed Tibetian peoples...to the irritation of China. Player: James Dunson.
Lifeforce: A citizen of the United States, Lifeforce possesses the equivalent life energies of hundereds, if not thousands of normal people. This gives her a phenominal endurance, durability, strength, resistance to climate extremes, and an ablity to heal others. Lifeforce is one of the few UNIT supers who maintains a secret identity, due in part to her poor self image. Player: Mark Haymaker.
Professor Nagata: This Japanese super has suffered the most for his very existance. Unscrupulous co-researchers transfered his brain into the security robot that he must now call home. Nagata is still a briliant scientist, and carries a variety of sensor equipment needed by his team. Player: Eric Pawtowski.
Radar Ranger: A former Asustrailian outback ranger who turned super- hero when an accident gave him powers over microwave energies. RR joined UNIT to get away from the organized criminals who want him dead. Player: Daniel Pawtowski.
Silent Shadow: One of the newest members of UNIT-M. Shady is a former Hong Kong vigilante, and a Highlander-style Immortal. She is a master of hand-to-hand combat, and rivals Lifeforce's ability to recover from damage. Silent Shadow has not yet revealed her true age to her fellows. Player: Yvonne Pawtowski. |
Sparky: The only non-human member of UNIT-M to date. Sparky is a Fuzzy Sapiens who had been collected by another, higher-tech species. The aliens in question made the mistake of passing over the Maelstrom on their landing approach, and were shot down for their efforts. Sparky, who had escaped to the engine room, developed electrical powers, which coupled with his natural aptitude for gadgeteering, makes him a valuble member of the team. Player: Yvonne Pawtowski. |
The Abbess: Brazillian native, and semi-permanently detatched member of the Catholic Church. The Abbess bears a powerful ability to control and enhance plant life. Of the members in UNIT-M, she is perhaps least comfortable with the superhero lifestyle, but is dedicated to her new calling. |
Visionaire: Originally a private investigator in Dublin, Ireland. Visionaire possesses a strong psychic talent that he has trained to a precision instrument through meditative techniques. He also carries a wide array of equipment, some of which he crafted specifically for his unseighlie enemies in Ireland, and some of which has turned out to be more than he thought possible. Player: Brad Haga. |
Dreamer: A character run by the Game Master, and the group's primary telepath. She used to be a Hong Kong vigilante, and was looking for a new city to reside in before 1997 when events drew her to UNIT-M. Her powers extend over the emotional and dreaming parts of the mind, making her more dangerous _after_ you've been knocked unconcious. |
Estrella: Aguila's animal sidekick. Estrella is an extra-terrestrial hunting bird from a high gravity planet. Having grown up with UNIT, intereacted with metahumans, and mindbonded to Aguila, she is not your typical raptor. |
Lt. Jaqueline Cassidy: The primary liason officer between UNIT-M and UNIT-X. Lt. Cassidy has seen more action than her youth would suggest, and possesses an ability to interact with nutcase metahumans, conservative officers, _and_ the UN Security Council, all with sufficient tact and dignity. |
Badoura al-Kasim: A refugee from South Yemen, and possessed of a global- scale ability to predict danger and disasters. She had tried to conceal her ability in hopes of _not_ being stoned as a witch, but predicted recently that her visions (and the agony attacks associated with not preventing the disasters) would lead to her death. Badoura is a devout Muslim, and does not enjoy the company of most of UNIT-M, but has accepted the burden of responsibility she feels Allah has placed upon her. |
Bulwark: A former New York Knight, he now serves full time with the UNSS on space station Overwatch. His primary power to project a powerful force bubble, with full life support and selective permeability, makes him _very_ popular with maintenance and rescue crews. He recently discovered an ability to travel unassisted at the speed of light, but has no control (or intrest!) in this talent. |
Francis: A lay Catholic minister and perhaps the most powerful telekinetic the world has ever known. Francis is a quadraplegic, and can not move far from the electrical energy source that fuels his powers. However, he serves as the UN space-launch system with a dedication none can match. |
