So, What's a "thru-hike" and what is Mike doing this summer?
It's OVER!!! See the Picture!!!
Well, on March 28th,1998, Mike will begin what's called a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (called the "AT" by most hikers) at Springer Mountain, Georgia. Mike will be "northbound", leaving the AT's southern terminus - across the winding foot-path that traverses the Appalachian ridge line for 2160 miles (see the map at left). A "thru-hike" means that he is attempting to hike all 2100+ miles of the Trail, with the journey hopefully ending on the summit of Mt. Katahdin, Maine in mid-September.
The AT is one of the greatest achievements of the U.S. National Park System, and winds its way through 14 states, 6 national parks, and many state and local parks. The entire trail is marked by 2" X 6" white rectangular blazes painted on everything from trees and rocks to signs and stiles.
These pages will be updated frequently by Mike's wonderful and devoted sister with news of Mike's progress.
