Smith & Wesson Model 629
.44 Magnum Revolver
This is, of course, Dirty Harry's gun. Actually, there is some controversy as to what exactly were the guns used in the first Dirty Harry film, but it's hard to forget the line, "But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?" Of course, the .44 Magnum wasn't the most powerful handgun in the world, then or now. But it sure feels like it is when you shoot it.

As I write this, I haven't shot the gun very much, since .44 S&W Special ammunition is so expensive and I am not crazy about shooting heavy .44 loads in any case (shooting .44 Magnum, for example, is exhausting, and I can't really enjoy doing it for more than a couple dozen rounds or so). This should change, however, as I start reloading .44 S&W Special because this is in fact a sweet, sweet gun.

Smith & Wesson are now the subject of a boycott by American shooters as a result of a deal they made with Clinton's Justice Department in 2000, which is really too bad because they still make an awfully nice revolver. It's much nicer, for example, than my Ruger GP-100. The Model 629 has, out of the box, a smooth double-action trigger pull and a very light single-action trigger, which of course can be improved if desired. The factory Hogue combat grips feel great, as do the factory target trigger and hammer. Once I get some good, cheap, light reloads for this gun, I might start using it in my monthly Bianchi-style competitions.
