Description

Saturday, 4/16
  6:00am alarm went off
  6:15am out of the tent
 ~8:15am hiking out
~10:15am at the base of The Daddy
 10:50am started up The Daddy

Took about 45 minutes to an hour for me to work my way part way (about 1/3?)
up the first pitch of The Daddy, get freaked out, and decide to down climb
to a small ledge with a tree where I could rappel the rest of the way down.

This worked out as fine with Lisa since she was freezing her ass off at the
base of the route since it was all in shade at that point.

We traversed across the wash to the base of The Prow and sat in the sun for
a while and had lunch.

~12:45pm started up the Prow
~6:15pm topped out on The Prow and met up with Kai and Lewis
 ~7:00pm back at camp
Sunday, 4/17
  6:00am alarm went off
6:45am rolled out of bed (Lisa was about 10-15 minutes later)
9:00am started hiking to Table Rock
~10:00am starting up Jim Dandy
2:25pm back at the parking lot

The four of us -- me, Lisa, Kai, and Lewis -- spent the day out at the Amphitheater. We were up and moving a little after 6am, and were done with breakfast and hiking out along the rim of the Gorge by 8:15. We got back to the campsite around 7pm. On Sunday we all climbed on Table Rock.

It was freakin' cold Saturday morning. After we got up, Lewis and Lisa made a bee-line for Lewis' vehicle and sat in there with the heater on while Kai and I got stoves going. The temperature was somewhere around freezing, but it was the wind that was the killer. By the time the sun was up and we were hiking out, it wasn't so bad. Sunday morning it wasn't too bad, either, since it was just cold and not windy.

The brief overview of the trip is that Lisa and I climbed as a team, and Kai and Lewis climbed as a team. On Saturday, Lisa and I started out on The Daddy ... and I ended up getting a little freaked out and backed off from about 50' up. We then moved over to The Prow and happily spent the afternoon climbing in the sun. Kai and Lewis climbed The Mummy and The Daddy. On Sunday, Lisa and I climbed Jim Dandy and the Cave Route before heading home. Kai and Lewis climbing Second Stanza.

Some beta on the hike out to the Amphitheater ...

If you're headed out to climb in the Amphitheater, be advised that there are a lot of trees down out there. I think it's the combination of the fire a few years ago and the hurricanes last fall. The trail along the rim is fine, but the trail down to the Prow and on down into the Amphitheater has a lot of trees across. Nothing impassable, but it looks a bit different than it used to.

Something else that's different is the white rock in the middle of the trail that I used as the marker for when to turn right and head down to the Prow is no longer there. Instead, there's a cairn on the right marking the trail. It's a rock about the size of a bowling ball sitting on a rock in the ground with a small rock on top. If you miss it and start heading down a steeper section and away from the Gorge, you've missed the turn. (And coming back up is tiring. Not that we'll admit to having had to do that. :)
