STONE MOUNTAIN REBOLTED

The rebolting project was a joint effort between CCC and the North Carolina Division of State Parks. The CCC got permission to rebolt the south side of the mountain through efforts by Sean Coburn (Access Fund rep), Aram Attarian CCC chair and Marshall Ellis, resource manager with state parks. All hardware was donated by retailers and manufacturers! Aram coordinated the effort with climbers and park staff.

Climbers donated their time and equipment (drills, etc.) for a four day work effort in December 1997. Included in this group were: Sean Coburn, Aram Attarian, Marshall Ellis, Burton Moomaw, Frank Carus, Brian Haslam, Mike Fischesser, Harrison Shull, Randy Franklin and others. Their hard work resulted in a new look for the south face. All protection bolts were replaced with 1/2" Petzl Long Life bolts, while all belay/rappel stations were replaced with 1/2" Fixe Ring anchors (w/Long Life bolts). CCC members will return to fill in all bolt holes and finish rebolting the routes to the left of Fantastic.

All of the old bolts and a number of fixed pins were removed. Some of these will be on display in a new exhibit being put together by Aram Attarian and the CCC. Wait until you see some of the stuff we removed!

New summit rappel stations were constructed (1) up and to the left of No Alternative; (2) at the top of the Arch;, and (3) at the top of Great White Way/ Brown Way. All tree anchors have been removed from the tree ledge and were replaced with 2 Fixe Ring anchors. Three rappel anchors were below and near the start of White Way, another centrally located on the tree ledge, and another located to the top and left of the Entrance Crack.

Please no more webbing around trees or left on bolts!
