| Day 4 ~ The Senior Class | |
We decided to spend our last day back on the Kenai; while the Kasilof also has
excellent fishing, we thought it would be more fun to give Greg a break with the
drift boat, but we were also a bit curious: after 2 days on the Kenai, had we
slayed them all?
Once again, we were out early and fishing,
once the fog lifted. The fishing today was in waves: some periods where we were all
hooking up, other's where there was time...to reminisce...about all that teenage angst
we endured at Justin (or did Justin endure us?).
Despite all the conversation, there were still plenty of
catching done. At one point it seemed like we were all nailing 13+ pound fish,
throwing them back because they weren't big enough! And then, it finally happened: the dry spell.
We went for almost 2 hours, Greg feverishly working the river to find the Elusive One.
At one point, after we had all reeled in, Greg started up the boat to travel just a bit up stream
(tide was heading out).
As we gazed at the bank, we were startled from our Fish Hallucinations by the sound of a loud
smack. We all turn around, and for a few seconds not a word is spoken, as there seems to
be no explanation for what's happened: an
11 pound salmon (apologies for the bloody picture), broken free after having been hooked by some
previous fisherman, had jumped into our boat while it was motoring up stream.
With the bright minds in the boat, we came to the quick calculation that the odds of this
happening were 1 in 3,738,210,665.4. This meant the fish gods were happy with us.
But not happy enough. Another hour of fishing (not catching)...we lost Rich to exhaustion...Russ and
Mark were ready to capitulate...Greg needed to get back and still have time to
clean our massive
haul for the day...but there was Kel (voted Most Improved over the course of
this trip), whose advice to the group (Cast Furiously) and enthusiasm wasn't enough to
get us out of our funk, until he caught (almost as Greg
was about to start the motor and head back to the ramp) the
last fish. It turned out to be the largest fish we caught that trip, a 14 pound
beauty.
Once again, the results were impressive.
