The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Among elected officials, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is probably the
most outspoken critic of "globalization." He has also completely redirected
Venezuelan politics and, for example, used oil revenues to fund programs for
the poor, which is 80% of his country. This has earned him not only
the enmity of the upper class in Venezuela but as well that of Bush
Administration. On August 15 he was reaffirmed as president in a
recall occasioned by his opponents.
"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is a fascinating documentary recording
the coup attempt against Hugo Chavez in 2002. Chavez was forced out of office
and then two days later, after millions took to the streets and numerous military
officers affirmed their loyalty to him, he was restored to power. Two video
journalists just happened to be in the middle of all this. Their documentary
is 74 minutes long, with lots of English subtitles.
We will start at 4 pm on Sunday afternoon, 9/26, and afterwards we will
discuss this video. If you want to stay for a pot luck supper, please
bring something to share.
