He served in the Heorthwerod of a number of Saxon Cynings on the continent, gaining fame in battles. He attracted many men to himself, and in 477 he sailed to southern Britain with three ships. The men of the Regnenses tribe attacked him as soon as he landed, but he defeated them in detail as they straggled towards the beach. Many men of the tribe fled the battlefield, not stopping until they were lost in the Andredesweald (the Weald). Aelle took many towns before Aurelius was able to gather his men to oppose him, and by then the saxons were too entrenched, so Aurelius had to make a deal with the Saxon leader. he appointed Aelle King of the South Saxons (those from the Romney marsh westwards). Aelle took this as license to pillage, attack and kill anyone who stood in his way of conquest. The town of Anderida resisted, killing his son Wlencing, and Aelle never forgave them. Description: Dates of Note 446 Born 477 Lands at Cymensora and immediately defeats the army of the Regnenses that sallies out to defend the land. 478 Makes peace with Aurelius and is appointed King of the South Saxons. Spends the year conquering small theods up and down the coast. By 480 he is truly a Cyning. 479 Wlencing killed during a skirmish outside Anderida, Aelle develops his Hate (Anderida) passion. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cyning Aelle of the Suth Saxe (as of 518 AD) After the death of his son in 479, Aelle spent his time and energy on planning the downfall of Anderida. Numerous raids weakened the Britons, and finally in 485, he attacked with his full force. He inscribed the runes of the Sacrifice to Wotan on a spear, his cast killed a Britain as it flew over the tallest tower of the wall. After the battle, all the inhabitants of the town were killed, the buildings burnt, cattle, sheep and all other animals killed. The walls were pulled down, and the town remained a ruin until after Badon.
