When Hengist and Horsa sailed across the channel, Beohtric was the commander of the third ship. He acquitted himself well at the Battle of Lincoln, shattering the Pictish center with a well-timed charge. For this, Hengist gave him governorship of Lindsey, the land east of Lincoln between the Wash and the Humber. Beohtric has had to contend with many attacks against his land, with little or no support from his cousin to the south. He led brilliant campaigns in the rebellions against Vortigern, smashing armies from the Parisi and Iceni. He has been unable to expand much past Lincoln, due to the spirited defense that the city has mounted, even patrolling the Roman road north and south of the City. Beohtric has been able to lead ship-raids up the Humber, Wittam and Welland, but his land invasions have met with a singular lack of success. He has had a long- running feud with the family of "Duke" Corneus, who claim to be descended from the sub-king that was displaced to make room for the saxons. While Hengist was alive, Beohtric served as his Ealdorman and Reeve in Lindsey. After Hengist died, Beohtric took control of the country in his own name. He is a weather-beaten man of extraordinary vigor, he rises each day before the sun and swims in the nearest river, lake or beach, then spends an hour in further physical exercise, ever training with his weapons, grappling and boxing, or just running.
