As such, Gawaine is the nephew of King Arthur, and is often seen as the closest Arthur has to an heir to the throne. Indeed, he is often called Arthur's favorite kinsman and knight, and Gawaine shows great love and loyalty to Arthur in return. Gawaine, as a young man, first came to Arthur's court in 511 when his mother Margawse decided to see for herself who this "Boy King" really was. During this escapade, Mordred was concieved, this adulterous (and unknowingly, incestual) tryst coloured the reign of Arthur for the remainder of his days. It also doomed Gawaine to death at the hands of his half-brother Mordred. However, these final dark days were still over five decades away. At the time, Gawaine was, as many people were, greatly impressed with the vitality of Arthur and his rapidly consolidating court. Indeed, the Boy King was only three years older than Gawaine! It was hard for Gawaine not to like Arthur instantly. Indeed, they were very much alike: bright young men, open and ambitious, fair of visage and flirtatious and easy-going with women, and with the adventuresome attitude of young knights, not elder statesmen. Perhaps it was hard for Gawaine not to compare himself to Arthur rather than his own father Lot. For, though he was tremendously loyal to his father, he didn't share the dark dourness of manner, and though it struck a chord deep in him, Gawaine bristled at the scheming politics that his father Lot played. Gawaine was always seen as the "practical, easy-going sort," at least compared to his brothers. (As a son of King Lot, this says quite a bit!) Gaheris was too hot-headed, but took after Gawaine the most in terms of chivalric qualities. Agravaine was a schemer like their father Lot, but never seemed to be as clever about it. Mordred, who came years later, was very clever, but not often as kind as Gawaine. Gareth was even more chivalrous than Gawaine in many ways, and a better knight besides, but because of this youth never gained the same stature to the public, ranking in court or as much of Arthur's favor. Gawaine often shared his family traits of impatience: loyal as a hound, quick to anger, slow to lose a grudge, but it took a lot more to get Gawaine riled up in the first place. If he was your friend at court, you had the ear of the High King and the comforts of all Camelot at your disposal. But if became your enemy, no rocky isle was remote enough to hide upon, and no darkness was impenetrable to his dire gaze. In addition, Gawaine's flirtatious eye often took him down paths his brothers eschewed.
