Why do camels have humps?

Two-humped camels have the ultimate hourglass figure, and
they get their curves the same way that people do. While
most of us are trying to conceal excess fat, camels have it
right out on display, where it helps to insulate against
the hot rays of the desert sun.

However, as any hungry camel can tell you, insulation isn't
the main function of the one or two humps located above the
spine. The hump is formed by pads of fat held together with
strong tissue. The fat provides energy for the camel when
food is scarce, which is why the hump shrinks between big
meals.
