Tom's

A nifty place for pizza. They advertise an outlandish selection of pizza toppings, and boy, do they deliver. As tempting as the venison and celery (?!) toppings sounded, we went with the "3 Cheese and 2-Mato" pizza, with mozzarella, parmesan, fontina, tomato sauce, and fresh tomatos (we substituted fontina for the standard cheddar - they have a large selection of other cheeses avilable). The tomato sauce was refreshingly unobtrusive - lightly spiced, and not too acidic. The mix of cheeses was excellent, and the fresh tomatos added a bit of bite and texture. The whole-wheat pizza crust was one of the best I've had in the Triangle: moist and chewy, but not saturated by the tomato sauce - not an easy task. A good beer selection topped off an excellent meal.

Directions

Directions to Pieworks and Ninth Street in general:

From Raleigh: Take 40 west to the first Durham Freeway (NC 147) exit. Stay on the Durham Freeway to the Swift Ave. exit ("To Ninth Street"). At the top of the ramp, turn right. Cross the railroad tracks immediately before the light at Swift and Main.

To get to Ninth Street (Ninth Street Bakery, Francesca's, Ravena's), turn left at the light at Swift and Main, then turn right at the next light onto Ninth Street.

To get to Pieworks and the Durham Wellspring, go straight through the light at Swift and Main and turn left into the Bull City Market shopping center just after the light.
