Ask Triangle Ascension

Have you wondered just what the devil is that staff that Mary carries around? How did Kevin know how to sing the Prophecy? Just what did Cab's dream of children and a ball mean? How did Reuben manage to gain renown? Now you can ask! Use the form below to send us your question or comment.

Two caveats, though: One, all of us have normal (well, mostly normal) lives to live, so if we don't get to your question immediately, please be patient. Two, if your question comes too close to unrevealed plot secrets, Rob may favor you with a cryptic public comment or reply by private e-mail, depending on how much time he has, and whether he's feeling cranky that day. (but we love him anyway)

3/3/98: Frank Koss writes: "I would just like to say that I myself have been a gamemaster for about 8 years now and I have covered most of the genres available. So when I first found your web-page I was very interested in the "goings-ons" of The Triangle Ascension and it's evolution both on and off the web.
I've refered several other people to it and they have agreed with me. Most gamemasters are just that, but you are a Story Teller. I hope to read more of the adventures of the intriguing and 3-dimensional characters in your world. You are fortunate to have players of this caliber.
So I really just wanted to say, excellent work to all involved. Kudos."

The Storyteller (Rob Napier) responds: Thanks so much for this note. A lot of credit has to go to my players who keep coming back week after week (and writing diaries!) I developed the more "character-driven" style after dealing with a bunch of players who considered themselves "plot-killers". I had to give up actually defining the plots, and let the stories go wherever they may.

1/27/98: Paul Gilbertson asks Thomas Martin (Walks All Paths): "How easy was it for a Wrewolf to fit into the Mage Chronicle? And was there any conflict of interests? As a mainly Werewolf Storyteller I am interested in these things. My WoD background contains the four races [except Changling] + Gargoyles and Immortals. However, I have never run a game with more than one "race" in the party..."

Thomas Martin replies: Integrating a werewolf into a mage chronicle was not as hard as some might think. The reason was that there were checks, balances, and preconceived conditions. The best way to look at it is by Garou auspice. Theurge have a lot in common with mages, they are both mystical groups. Philodox walk the middle path, so they should keep an open mind. Galliard love new experiences and adventure and would probably be willing to try it out for the sake of a new song or epic poem. Ragabash will do just about anything as long as they get what they want out of it, you get to infer the rest. Ahroun are, for the most part, right out. Their quick tempers, high physical stats and likelihood to frenzy makes any such grouping tenuous at best; a slaughter at worst (and perhaps not even intentionally.) As far as tribes go, your liberal or mystical tribes are your best bet, i.e. Children of Gaia, Uktena, Silent Striders, Glass Walkers, Bone Gnawers and Stargazers.

Always remember though, not all Get of Fenris are butchering bastards (but their friends probably are.)

As far as the mage side goes, once the mages get over the initial fear which, usually, comes with being near a nine-foot, eight-hundred pound engine of destruction, the rest is up to their point of view. Do the mages in question not care for the Garou and their beliefs, ideals, etc. or could they find a meeting point in-between?

Remember that anything can, and probably will, happen as the Apocalypse draws nigh. The need for allies is great, and the choices grow fewer every day...

12/16/97: Our friend Frederik writes to Tom Brady (Reuben Cabot): "Just wanted to say that your diary 'Loved Ones Lost' was very good. It was sad of course but at the same time very enjoyable, great work if you ask me!"

Reuben Cabot (Tom Brady) replies: Thanks, Frederik! It was very hard to write, and while I have been trying to write my diaries in the order that they occurred, I wanted to write this one as soon as possible to be sure I got the emotions right. And while it was hard for Reuben to lose his familiar, I was happy with the sense of closure from their last meeting.

11/14/97: Our friend Frederik in Sweden writes: "Senmut's story really helped me to tie some things together. I'll admit that is was hard to read sometimes and I can only imagine how it was to write the darn thing.

Other than that, the plot summaries are very good (as usual). You guys are spoiling us, but by all means, keep up the good work !!!"

The Storyteller (Rob Napier) replies: It was a challenge to write, although you start to get used to it after a while. The real challenge was the section on the Pure One which mixes singular and plurals. Luckily it was short.

I've quit tormenting the party with poetry and verb tenses, and switched to putting everything in Arabic. Now I need to pull down an Arabic "font" to put in the plot summary. I'm having a lot of trouble finding one that can be read by web viewers (and is free...) I started studying Arabic recently, and a little knowlege is a dangerous thing. If I actually put the stuff up, I'm sure a real Arabic speaker is going to mail me laughing.

10/10/97: Jay writes: "Hello! No questions, yet...

I just wanted to say hello, from one Triangle based Troupe to another.

My meager band and I (there's four of us, though we're searching for a fifth or even a sixth under the right circumstances) meet every weekend for two games. Currently its Changeling: The Dreaming and Mage: The Ascension. We just finished one Mage chronicle and are moving into a new one.

If you're curious about our games, they have webpages as well. The old Mage page (Forget Me Not) is at: http://www.mindspring.com/~sealed/index.htm

And the current Changeling page (City of clouds) is at: http://www.mindspring.com/~jjgray/clouds/main.htm

It's nice to know there are other gamers out there. Sometimes I despair."

The Webmaster replies: Thanks for your comments, Jay. It is indeed good to know that the World of Darkness is alive and well in the Triangle. Nifty pages, too!

10/1/97: Frederik in Sweden asks "Could we know a little more about the players in the chronicle?"

The Webmaster replies: Our players currently include a chemist, two biologists, a chemical engineer, two computer engineers, an engineering scientists (currently mining HTML), a student (art major), and a technical writer (currently serving time at Kinko's).
