Background:
I was born on June 21, 1968 in the middle of a storm. I suppose
I got a good view of it, since my parents were still on the way
to the hospital. My older sister, Jennifer, eventually forgave
me for invading her family. We were joined, almost three years
later, by my brother Keith. The three of us enjoyed the normal
childhood fights and games.
The highlight of every year was the week before the fourth of July. My father would take a week off from accounting and we would drive out to the Superior National Forest. At the end of the week, we returned home, to Virginia, Minnesota, to watch the fireworks.
I began first grade at the age of seven, and there met one of my two best friends. His name was Robert White, but he preferred to be called Bob. We had a lot of fun together - I liked to take things apart, and Bob liked to put things together. We only got in trouble we we got out of synch.
Bob liked sports more than I did, and made the JV track team in ninth grade. I would take my books to the home games, study and cheer him on. I met my other best friend that year. George Alexander was an all-around jock - cross country in the fall, wrestling in the winter, track in the spring. Bob hung out with George, so I did too, and was soon helping him out with math. George could have gotten by taking regular classes, but he liked to push himself - he was aiming for a college scholarship. He got one, too.
The three of us went to the same college - St. Cloud State University. George majored in physical education - he wanted to go into coaching. Bob went through the electrical engineering course, and I ended up taking a degree in Comprehensive Physics. We parted ways after graduation, though we still keep in touch. George is teaching and coaching in Virginia, Bob has a job with a firm in Denver. I went on to a doctoral program in quantum physics at the University of California, San Diego.
