What Has Gone Before, Book II, Chapter 3: "Going...Down?"

A continuing history of Triangle Accension
Last modified: Tue Jul 7 14:41:15 EDT 1998

Those of you who are just coming into the story of Triangle Ascension may be put off by the large amount of information to be found on these web pages. These files are intended to be a short summary of the action up to this point, and will be updated every week or two.

The Setting

Our story takes place in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, USA, including Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. With few exceptions, all geographic places mentioned actually exist. Our group began gaming in September of 1996; Book II begins about six months after the end of Book I, May 29, 1998 (which actually puts us slightly into the future in terms of game-play, but we figure we'll catch up soon enough).

The Characters

You can read more about the individual characters by clicking on their names. Book II marks a major turning point, when many of the characters we have grown to love leave us for greener pastures. Many of the Triangle Ascension players chose to start over with new characters at the end of Book I. After all, once you've been to the beginning of the universe and back, you can't just go to Disneyworld.

The Story

Book II, Chapter 3: "Going...Down?"

There are no Vampires in Raleigh, but there are Gods in Durham...

Late Saturday night 6/27/98 / early Sunday morning 6/28/98

The vortex became a black hole and then disappeared, leaving the mages standing on nothing.

Time 0 In darkness they fall. Lack of air makes it painful to breathe.
Time 3 Seconds Satin attempts a Time spell to increase the number of actions the falling mages get before the ground, unsuccessfully. Alex begins an Entropy spell to marshall the winds to his bidding, that they might blow up and slow his fall. Glenn and Sarah cast Mind spells to talk with each other. David locks his legs around the unconscious Reuben to free his hands.
Time 6 Seconds Satin attemps her Time spell again, again failing. Alex continues his wind spell. Glenn and Sarah discuss their plight and agree to try a group mental link. David fishes out a lighter from his pockets. Rachel begins a Prime spell to remove the Quintessence from the kinetic energy of falling, and bleed off the fall, trying to save the group, unsuccessfully.
Time 9 Seconds Satin attempts another Time spell, to slow her core energy and fall slower, unsuccessfully. Alex continues his wind spell, beginning to fall slower than everyone else. Glenn and Sarah begin the Mind casting for the group mental link. David opens the lighter and using its fluid begins drawing a sigil on his chest. Rachel angles her fall toward the nearest mage, Satin.
Time 12 Seconds Satin begins to dance, freefall dirty dancing is certainly an interesting sight. Alex continues his wind spell, slowing noticeably and drifting away from the rest of the mages, now falling only at 105 mph. Glenn and Sarah continue the Mind spell, completing the mental link. David finishes drawing the sigil and repockets the lighter. Rachel connects with Satin. As the mental link attempts to include Rachel she screams, but doesn't pass out. Rachel recovers, and begins singing, although she can't even hear herself due to the rushing of the wind.
Time 15 Seconds Satin continues dancing. Alex continues his wind spell. Glenn speaks over the mental link "We all need to work together." Satin "How?" Glenn "David, you can cast fireballs, can you do something useful?" David is occupied and doesn't reply, busy casting a Forces spell to ignite the sigil on his chest which burns an eery clear yellow. The flames are painful, but David is unfazed. Rachel begins again the Prime spell to bleed Quintessence from the group's fall, although she only has the range to affect herself and Satin.
Time 18 Seconds The mages are now perhaps at 20,000 feet and still falling rapidly, the main group still at 115 mph. Satin attempts a Time/Correspondance spell to teleport down and bleed off her velocity, still dancing as a focus. David has completed his casting and replies "I can slow the fall. If you can help, circle up and concentrate." Satin is busy casting, and so can't try yelling the news to Rachel. Rachel continues her Prime spell. Glenn angles his fall and is caught by David. Alex lets his spell lapse and tries to angle in but doesn't quite get there yet, as does Sarah.
Time 21 Seconds Satin is still dancing and casting her Time/Correspondance spell. Rachel continues her Prime spell, causing Rachel and Satin's fall to slow slightly. David begins chanting enochian and casting a huge Forces spell to form a force wall under the group to float down on. Glenn knows some rudimentary Forces and adds to the spell (total 2 successes). Alex and Sarah join the circle. The rush of power tingles through all circled mages, and David's sigil changes color to a bright red shot with silver.
Time 24 Seconds Satin's efforts can't carry off her Time/Correspondance spell, which lapses. Satin continues dancing. Rachel keeps casting her Prime spell. David continues the Forces field spell. Sarah also has rudimentary Forces and joins the spell (total 4 successes).
Time 27 Seconds The two groups fall away from each other. Satin keeps dancing. Rachel continues her Prime spell. David continues his Forces spell (total 8 successes). The groups are now falling at the same rate again.
Time 30 Seconds Satin begins her spell again, still dancing, unsuccessfully. Rachel lets her spell drop due to accumulated difficulty and begins her Prime spell anew. Satin and Rachel feel a lurch like a short elevator drop as they resume normal fall. David continues his Forces spell (total 9 successes), which slows the circle further. The two groups are no longer falling apart.
Time 33 Seconds Satin continues dancing. Rachel continues her Prime spell. Alex begins an Entropy spell to increase the odds of landing on something soft. David continues his Force spell (total 10 successes).
Time 36 Seconds Satin pulls on Rachel and points toward the other group. Satin tries to join the circled group, but Rachel is still in the middle of casting and does not coordinate her fall. Satin and Rachel begin tumbling. Rachel gets dizzy and loses her spell. Satin re-stabilizes them. Alex continues his plea for a soft landing area. David continues his Forces spell (total 11 successes).
Time 39 Seconds Satin and Rachel again try to join the large circled group. Satin begins tumbling again and loses her grip on Rachel. Rachel successfully joins the group. Alex continues his Entropy spell. David continues his Forces spell (total 13 successes). Rachel begins singing again.
Time 42 Seconds Satin again tries and fails to join the group. Satin passes under the circle, still tumbling. Alex continues his Entropy spell. Rachel begins her Prime spell again. David continues casting, but meets with added resistance (still 13 successes so the difficulty goes up further).
Time 45 Seconds Satin teleports to the center of the circle. She feels like she hit a wall as she bounces off the silvery force field. Owie, that's leaving a bruise. Rachel now realizes the spell involved (remember, she is not linked into the mind link, she has a sphere problem with Mind effects) and joins the Forces spell. Sarah and Glenn pour more effort into the spell, as does David as he continues the Forces spell (total 18 successes). The field is now semi-opaque and fairly solid. A vapor trail begins to form behind the field, and the effect glows brightly. From afar this has got to look like a comet. Alex continues his Entropy spell.
Time 48 Seconds Satin lies groaning in the middle of the circle, safely within the field's effects. Alex continues his Entropy spell. David continues the Forces spell (total 20 successes). Suddenly the field turns solid and opaque white. The field is now fully operational, and guidable by the caster. David slows the group by 0.1g. Sarah asks plaintively how high we are. Satin replies that altitude is 10,000 feet and descent is at 50 mph.

The fall continues at the same speed with frequent updates from Satin until about 2,000 feet altitude. David resumes braking the group by 0.1g increments. As the ground draws close the group notices that it is headed for the Durham Bulls Park, which is filled with people watching the fall. There is rapid discussion about how the fall will be explained, with the decision that it won't, leave a little mystery in life. The group lands in the center of the group of people, on a pile of their shirts and jackets which is very soft. Satin immediately begins dancing as soon as she can stand.

A man wearing a ragged robe steps forward. David turns to Rachel "Looks like it's one of yours after all." Rachel steps forward to meet the robed man. The man wears no adornments, and kneels before Rachel. Rachel puts a hand on his shoulder "Stand up." He stands. David asks Sarah if she can wake Reuben up; she shakes her head.

Rachel "Look up. Raise your head. Who are you?"

Robed Man "I am Michael, prophet. I have brought these people to hear your wisdom."

Satin comes dancing up to Rachel's right shoulder. Alex walks to Rachel's left. David grins broadly and steps in behind them to form a diamond, standing broad shouldered with his arms crossed.

Rachel "The wisdom we have is but a few words."

Michael repeats back over his shoulder "The wisdom they have is but a few words!"

Rachel removes first her right glove, then her left.

Satin "Let's Party!"

Michael "Let's Party!"

Rachel "In a moment."

Michael immediately looks shamefaced, "Sorry."

Rachel "No, don't apologize. The wisdom you seek is in a few words. The Earth needs needs healing. We bring the method."

Satin steps forward, takes his hands, and begins dancing with Michael. Rachel walks past them into the crowd. The crowd parts and bows. Rachel sings an impromptu song whose topic is 'Stop Bowing.' Alex looks over to David "Can you amplify my voice and drop it?" "Yes. Don't add too much. This is a great moment."

Michael "Who are you?"

Satin "I'm Satin"

Michael "Can I bring you anything?"

Satin "How far are you willing to go?" The man immediately falls to his knees before her.

David succeeds very well with the effects Alex had asked for. Alex's voice booms out sternly "Bring happiness and wonder back into the world. But beware! The corrupt and the evil will feel my vengeance."

A man steps forward from the crowd "Who are you?" Alex replies "Where needed I am vengeance." The man looks around in petulant confusion "Michael, you told us a God was coming! Who are these people? What is going on?"

Rachel walks to him "Do you think that God has only one form?"

The man immediately apologizes.

Rachel adds "Don't apologize. It is your nature to think."

Satin comes over, dancing close to him "Why do you wonder how many Gods there are? Do you not see a Goddess before you? Are you not enjoying it?"

A man over on the edge of the crowd bursts out "I do! I do!"

Satin kisses the man she backed into the crowd, and dances over to the man who just shouted out. He is considerably less bashful.

Glenn and Sarah are tending to Reuben in the coat pile.

Michael comes forward again "Is there anything we can get you? One of you is asleep. Can we take you anywhere?"

Rachel "Food and a bottle of wine. Do not disturb this one. It is his resting time. He has created the world for you."

Michael claps his hands "Gabriel!" A man comes over with a litter. David releases some Paradox and begins to glow odd green flickering lines, like he's short circuiting.

Dawn begins to let the sun slip over the horizon. The group notices there had not been any lights on here. They also notice that nearly nobody is wearing any jewelry, no earrings, no necklaces, only a few wedding or engagement bands. The crowd is a mixture of men and women. The sky no longer contains the vortex.

Rachel "Michael, you have offered us much. However, I would just like food, drink, and conversation."

Michael claps his hands "Food! Drink!" From the edge people come forward with carts full of wine, liquer, bottles, cans, vegetables, popcorn, and some hotdogs that don't look too well.

Alex notices that the group is no longer in the Shadowlands, but the shroud is also obviously missing. Satin is curious about when she has actually returned to and finds that it is Sunday 6/28/98 at 5:30 am in North Carolina.

Glenn and Sarah move Reuben onto the litter. A man moves as if to pick up the litter, but is stopped by the man standing next to him; both look expectantly at Glenn and Sarah. Glenn motions and the men pick up the litter, "Take us to someplace comfortable." Alex follows the litter along with Glenn and Sarah. A crowd follows the mages and the litter.

Rachel walks to a group of people still huddled, apparenly not having much fun. "What questions do you want answered? What concerns you?" Nobody says a word. "Do you fear for your life?" People gather around and listen raptly, but do not respond. When Rachel turns to look around the crowd whispers to its neighbors.

Satin is still dancing wildly around in the crowd. She has taken off her shirt and dances with it, occasionally running it over her dance partners. Satin dances through the crowd, trying to share the fun, angling toward huddled people. Some of those people run openly from her, but many follow her enthusiastically. The crowd presses close around her, including three naked men and one naked woman. One of those men is a good dancer, everyone else isn't particularly good at it, but all are very enthusiastic. A group of people follow Satin everywhere she goes.

Alex feels uneasy, and walks over to Rachel. The crowd around Rachel is facing her, not looking at Alex. Alex gently pushes through. The people turn as he touches them, and step back in startlement. Soon the crowd has fallen like dominoes and parted like a wedge went before him. Alex goes through to Rachel, "Rachel, we should leave with Reuben." Rachel turns to him, "We should go. Let's collect Satin." The crowd whispers excitedly "Her name is Satin!" Rachel looks bemused "Everyone has a name. All you have to do is ask it." Rachel walks through the crowd, followed by Alex. Someone rushes forward to kiss her, and then drops back into the crowd.

Rachel gets to Satin. Satin grabs her hands, so Rachel begins to dance along, "Hi Rachel! Isn't this great?"

Rachel "It's time to go. We should attend to the other."

Satin "You're no fun!"

Rachel "We will be later." Rachel leads Satin off, still dancing together, stringing the crowd along behind like a conga line.

David notices that the group seems to be collecting again toward Reuben's litter. He casts and forms a light show ahead of him as he walks toward the litter. David's grin seems to know no bounds, he's noticed how much easier it is casting here with a friendly mob, and thoughts fill his head about the Order of Hermes finally being able to lead humanity toward ascenscion again. These thoughts are dampened only slightly by the worry about other people who saw the group fall but have not arrived yet and who might not be so friendly.

Satin has left an orgy on the infield. She has added to the crowd's enjoyment with a Mind effect. Rachel is now within the field of Satin's encouragement, and begins noticing that she's feeling incredibly horny. Rachel turns and gives Satin a hug, as reason goes out the window. With her susceptability to Mind magics, Rachel becomes lost to Satin's spell, turning bestial with lustful hunger, and attaching herself to Satin. Satin recognizes what has happened to Rachel and kisses her back to keep her occupied. Satin tries to use another Mind spell to calm Rachel down, but it doesn' seem to be working. Alex manages to get closer "Satin, calm her down." Satin keeps kissing her and tries again to calm her down. Satin breaks loose "Catch me." and runs from Rachel. The crowd lets Satin pass and closes before Rachel, letting Rachel push her way through. They don't seem to remember they're stopping one they treat as a God,they lover her and they just want to see a good chase and don't want Satin to get caught too soon. Somewhere in the crowd Rachel loses her jacket.

Somewhere in the dancing Satin has lost her shirt. She runs half naked across the field toward the big exit in the outfield that the litter is headed toward. Rachel runs after her in a sea of people, coming to her senses once she's not near Satin, and she remembers very well just what she had done but has no idea what came over her.

The crowd following the litter through the outfield notices the mob running toward them, and picks up their pace. David is somewhere between the 2 groups.

End of gaming session
