Vass Season Dhammachakka Sutra session Signup - 200 7

Dear Devotees,

During Asala Poya Ceremony at NC Buddhist Vihara, we formally invited our Bhanthes Ven. Wajirapala Thero and Ven. Dhammika Th ero to reside at our temple during the 3 month long .Vass Season. (Rainy Season) which started today (July 30, 2007).

Like last year, during this Vass Season there will be chanting of .Dhamma Chakka Sutra. twice daily. The evening session star ts at 7:30PM. In addition, there will be bi-weekly Dhamma Sermon sessions (on Fridays) immediately following Dhamma chakka Sutta chanting, starting August 10th, 2007

Please do your best to attend these sessions regularly. Also, please help to fill the remaining slots in the Dhanaya Schedule during this Vass Season by signing up at the temple website.

NC Buddhist Viharaya will be conducting meditation session s on every Friday at 7.45pm commencing on May 26th, 2006. These classes are good for beginners too. All are welcome. Please be good enough to be punctual to minimize the disturbances during sessions.

Nikini Poya Ceremony - 2007

This year, North Carolina Buddhist Viharaya Nikini Poya Ceremony was held on 25th August, 2007.
Three months after Parinibbana or the passing away of the Buddha, the first Dharma Sangayanaya or council of Sangha to discuss ways and means to preserve the doctrine of the Buddha was convened at the request of king Ajasatta under the chairmanship of Arahat Kassapa on a Nikini Poya day.

Asala Poya Ceremony - 2007

This year, North Carolina Buddhist Viharaya Asala Poya Ceremony will be held on 29th July, 2007.
Asala Poya commemorates the first sermon (The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) preached by the Buddha after enlightenment, in which he revealed the four Noble Truths and the Noble 8-fold Path.
The next day the yearly 3 months rains retreat (vassa) of Buddhist Bhikkhus start.

Poson Poya Ceremony - 2007


This year, North Carolina Buddhist Viharaya Poson Poya Ceremony will be held on 30th June, 2007.
Poson commemorates the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Arahat Maha Mahinda (son of King Asoka of India) at Mihintale in the third century B.C. Ven Mahinda established the Buddhasasana in Sri Lanka

This year an "Adhi Poya" falls on 31st of May, full moon day. For this, North Carolina Buddhist Viharaya is holding a special Gilanpasa Pooja on Saturday 2nd June starting at 5:30pm.
Gilanpasa Pooja will be followed by Pirith sermon and a meditation session. The event will take about 90 minutes.
Tea and refreshments will be served.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend this event.

Saturday 3rd, March, 2007Madin Poya Ceremony

Madin Poya, which falls in the month of March, signifies Lord Buddha's first visit to his father, King Suddhodana, after reaching Enlightenment. During this visit, Lord Buddha showed his father and other relatives the path to Enlightenment and ordained his son, Prince Rahula, as a monk.

Saturday 06th January, 2007Duruthu Poya Ceremony
Duruthu Poya is celebrated in honour of Lord Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka. This visit took place in the first year of The Buddha's Supreme Enlightenment.


Everyday at 7.30pm (from Dec. 01 to Dec. 31, 2006)Jaya Piritha and blessings for the New Year 2007.
NC Buddhist Viharaya will be conducting Jaya Piritha Sermons everyday starting from December 1st, 2006 until new year to bring blessings for the upcoming New Year 2007.
On December 31st night there will be Jaya Piritha and special pooja starting at 11:30pm and finishing at 12:15am at the temple to bless everyone for the New Year.
Pirith water and Pirith strings will be offered to everyone followed by Kiribath and other Sri Lankan sweets. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these sermons. This is a great Sri Lankan and Buddhist tradition to start the new year in a positive mind-set.
Those who cannot make it on 31st night are welcome to visit the temple anytime during the day on 1st January for Pirith and blessings. Please note the Theros will be away for Dhanaya offering from 10am till 2pm. Also, on the 1st January,there will be a special "pooja" at 6:00pm at the temple to bring blessings for the New Year.

Pirith sermon and Pooja was held at temple to bestow merits to all the lives affected by Tsunami catastrophe.


Saturday 09th December, 2006Unduvap Poya Ceremony
Unduvap poya signifies the arrival of the Bo-tree sapling. This was brought to Sri Lanka from India by Buddhist Theri Sanghamitta, and it is this very tree that is venerated by Buddhists in Anuradhapura. It is also the oldest documented tree in the world.

Saturday November 04th, 2006North Carolina Buddhist Vihara first Katina Pinkama and Vihara opening ceremony was held on Saturday November 4th, 2006 at the temple premises.

Katina Pinkama
Katina is one of the main festivals in the Buddhist calendar. The Katina ceremony was the culmination of the Vas season. At the end of three months a special robe known as the Katina was offered to monks of every monastery which observed the Vas.

Saturday October 07th, 2006Vap Poya Ceremony
The Vap Poya falls in the month of October and for this year it falls on Saturday the 7th of October. Vap poya signifies the conclusion of Lord Buddha.s preaching of the Abhidhamma scripture for three months to his mother in the Heavenly realm (devaloka).
It is also on this poya day that King Devanampiyatissa sent envoys to India to request from his friend, King Asoka, to send his daughter, Arahat Sanghamitta Theri, to Sri Lanka to establish the Bhikkhuni Sasana (Order of Nuns).

Dhammachakka Pavattana Sutraya sermons was be held at temple for Vas season. This was started at 7:30pm everyday and lasted for about 45 minutes (including preparation and conclusion).


Saturday September 09th, 2006Binara Poya Ceremony
Binara Poya comes in the month of September. Binara Poya commemorates two important events at our Baggyavat Govthama Samma Samuddha's era. It Commemorates the Buddha's visit to Thusitha (Thavtisa) Devlova to preach Abhidhamma to his mother and celestial multitude. Also it commemorates the inauguration of the Bhikkuni Sasana by the Buddha. The Vinaya Chullavagga account says that the Maha Prajapathi Gothami, Buddha's maternal aunt who was also his foster mother came forward with a band of Sakyan ladies and asked the Buddha for ordination in the Bhikkuni Sangha. Let us commemorate the Binara Poya and inspire the greatness of Dhamma and understand what life is all about.
