Terminology: Issue-Type: This is still to be classified (presently considering that it could be one of Hughes/XLRI/Center/Individual/Students/Professors/...) Status: This can be one of New/Assigned/Open/Postponed/Partial/Resolved/Closed The meaning of these states are as follows: New : Issue has been submitted afresh. Assigned : Someone has been assigned to look into this. Open : The assignee has started working on this. Postponed : The issue resolution has been postponed for some reason. Postponement reasons to be explained. Partial : Resolution is partial in nature. Still more needs to be done. Details to be enclosed. Resolved : The issue has been resolved. Closed : The issue has been closed, i.e, decided not to be resolved for some reason. Closure reasons to be explained. [Since the above indicates that issues will be assigned to someone, it obviously means that there must be an overall owner of this effort (from either Hughes/XLRI)] *************************************************************************** Course : PGCBM Institute : XLRI Batch : PGCBM03 Issue No : 001 Issue Type : To-Be-Classified Date Identified : 30-Oct-2003 Submitter : Date of Last Update : Status : New Owner : Date of Closure : Description: End term exams can't be conducted in weekdays at any cost in the future. These have to be in the weekends, and scheduled atleast 2 months in advance. Dates can't be provided at the drop off a hat for such events. Further, there should be an alternate option available for those who can't write it during such dates. Information about all of this has to be published (if such plans are already available). Notice about such events must be put up on XLRI/Hughes site in a form and location that is easily accesible for the students. Appropriate alerts must also be sent via email and/or the usual mode of snail-mail communication. Imagine the plight if each professor were to declare the same as an advance clause. Not only will students have to be present for each and every class (an impossible thing by itself, especially more so for working professionals - henceforth referred to as WPs), it also adds the additional task of having to be prepared all the while for academic "tests". Please understand that it will be quite difficult to expect WPs to be in an examination alertness state all the while. They are received after 1 week (earlier it was supposedly fortnightly). If the centers themselves can copy the sessions while they are being held, it would be so convenient (and save download times as well as bandwith later). All that it takes is more hard disk space at each centre. With Hard Disk space falling down by each day, this shudn't be too much of an issue. If it's something about the technology in use not being able to accomodate such a thing, you should probably take a very hard look at this - if not for the near future, it would at least help in the long run. With Hughes expecting to expand to around 300-500 centres in the near future, such facilities will help in the penetration of such courses and the way it's being handled. Another option would be to host these via the internet in a controlled portal. An example is the BITS online education portal available @ http://202.54.26.115/bits/Portal/dlpd/default.asp Resolution : To-Be-Decided (TBD) > All archives are being transfered from the studio twice every > week.If required occasionally we have sent the archives repeatedly. > A process is being worked out to keep a track of all the archive > requests and realisation of the requests .Very soon you would be > informed about the same. *************************************************************************** Course : PGCBM Institute : XLRI Batch : PGCBM03 Issue No : 005 Issue Type : To-Be-Classified Date Identified : 30-Oct-2003 Date of Last Update : Status : New Owner : Date of Closure : Description: Schedule of classes isn't maintained as per the intimation. This is really strange. Why cant ALL the books etc be given in the beginning itself? Why the piece meal? Note that giving out a terms books in advance will help those students who want to concentrate on some subjects a bit more. The only thing could be that this is done in order to be able to provide the latest editions, but then at least those books which are not expected to change editions within that term can be handed out in advance and a notification about the rest of the books be provided at the same time. It was stated that a "sustainable solution is being looked into". Note that most of the students use public domain, free email-ids for this course purpose. These have limitations and it is impossible to maintain all email traffic or course material sent out via the lists. Sometimes, the course material contents are themselves so huge that they can't be accomodated in some public email boxes. Either everyone shud be given a temporary email-id via xlri, or atleast be asked to created an exclusive one for this course purpose (due to the amount of traffic), or other alternatives looked into. And none of these can actually replace the requirement of an online repository of the entire course contents. If there are requirements to have these restricted only to the course students, there are enough technical measures available to have this done. On a slightly related note, it might be beneficial to take a look at MIT's OpenCourseWare initiative (http://ocw.mit.edu/). Prof. Gangopadhyay is an excellent teacher. However, he is like an express train. There is no time for me one to consolidate thoughts. Even after pressing the "No" button when being asked whether we have understood or not, he always takes an average of 80-90% which has pressed "Yes" and proceeds further.
