March 2002

Here's my first stab at building a land-yacht. This has been a real interesting experiment in snagging free bits of bicycling parts. That pink fork was a "Dream Crusing" dirt bike found at Sim's Metals for 7 bucks. I'm going to put a wheel on from a garage sale bike - 50 cents. And... last week I grabbed a free bike from a bike shop after asking about the best place to get junk bikes. Turns out that the guy there was sick of working on an old univega.

Those wheels are for a hand cart, 9 bucks at home depot. Nice white walls, eh?

Yellow slabs of plywood, free. Julian's kindergarden class was getting renovated, so I saved the shelving in the classroom. The square tubing was cheaper that I expected it would be. 15 feet of it was less than 12 bucks.

Spent some time yesterday bolting some of the parts together. The two side were bolted to an angle bracket, which is then bolted on to the axle. There are still clamps in place for holding the front wheel to the frame, I'll weld them this tuesday. There wasn't much wind today so Julian had to push mom around.

I'll have more detail photos of the land-yacht as I progress in building it. It's currently just a bunch of tubes, C-clamped together with a sawed off pink bike.

If you are interested in the design of the land-yacht, check out where I got the plans from. Another site with land-sail plans

Another windy morning. The smaller sail that I made with the land yacht isn't cutting it. So I got the lug rig from Boat II. Much better. Still, the wind at the local community college parking lot is gusty and not quite strong/persistant enough. One of these days I have to do this in the dessert.

I didn't realize how small those rear wheels are.... Gotta do something about them. Likely I'll move up to wheel barrel wheels.
