About This Guide

This section defines the audience and scope of this guide and briefly describes the contents of each chapter. There are also descriptions of the icons and conventions used to convey instructions and information.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or http://www-europe.cisco.com.

Audience and Scope

This guide is for the networking or computer technician responsible for installing and configuring a Catalyst 2900 series XL switch. It is assumed that this individual is familiar with the concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area networking.

The scope of this guide is to provide all the information you need to install the switch, change the configuration of the switch, and troubleshoot any problems that might arise.


Note Although this guide contains all the information you need to install and configure the switch, see the Catalyst 2900 Series XL Command Reference for more information about of the Cisco IOS commands supported by the Catalyst 2900 series XL switches.

Document Organization

This guide is organized into the following chapters:

Chapter 1, "Introduction," is a physical and functional overview of the switch. It describes the switch ports, the standards they support, and the switch LEDs. Examples of how the switch could be installed suggest possible deployment strategies.

Chapter 2, "Concepts," explains some features in greater detail, including trunk grouping, Spanning-Tree Protocol, and flooding controls.

Chapter 3, "Installation," contains the complete procedures for installing a switch on a rack, table, or shelf. It also how to assign IP information to the switch.

Chapter 4, "Web-Based Management," describes how to use the web-based Switch Manager to configure the switch.

Chapter 5, "Cisco IOS Management" introduces you to the Cisco IOS command line interface (CLI) and describes how to move between command modes and enter the commands for some typical procedures.

Chapter 6, "SNMP Management" is an overview of SNMP management techniques and briefly describes how to access the MIBs supported by the Catalyst 2900 series.

Chapter 7, "Troubleshooting," describes how to identify and resolve some of the problems that might arise when installing and configuring a Catalyst 2900.

Appendix A, "Technical Specifications," lists the physical and environmental specifications for the switches and the regulatory agency approvals.

Appendix B, "Connectors and Cables," describes the connectors, cables, and adapters that can be used to connect to a Catalyst 2900 switch.

Appendix C, "Translated Safety Warnings," contains translations in various languages of the warnings in this guide.

Notes, cautions, and warnings use the following conventions and symbols:


Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. The warning symbol also means that you can see the warning in multiple languages in "Translated Safety Warnings."

Waarschuwing  Dit waarschuwingssymbool betekent gevaar. U verkeert in een situatie die lichamelijk letsel kan veroorzaken. Voordat u aan enige apparatuur gaat werken, dient u zich bewust te zijn van de bij elektrische schakelingen betrokken risico's en dient u op de hoogte te zijn van standaard maatregelen om ongelukken te voorkomen.
