Turbo Flooding of UDP Datagrams on Cisco 7200 Series Routers

Description

Turbo flooding is now supported on Cisco 7200 series routers. Turbo flooding speeds up flooding of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) datagrams using the spanning-tree algorithm. This feature is useful for quickly downloading periodic updates from a server to multiple clients in an environment where updates are frequent and speed and latency are primary considerations.

Configuration Tasks

To use the turbo flooding feature, refer to the "Speed Up Flooding of UDP Datagrams" section in the "Configuring IP" chapter of the Network Protocols Configuration Guide, Part I. For additional information, refer to the "Configure Broadcast Packet Handling" section in the "Configuring IP" chapter of the Network Protocols Configuration Guide, Part I.

Configuration Examples

The following example enables turbo flooding on a Cisco 7200 series router. Bridging must be configured on each interface that is to participate in the flooding. If bridging is not configured on an interface, the interface will never forward broadcasts it receives, and the router will never use the interface to send broadcasts received on a different interface.

router# configure terminal
router (config)# ip forward-protocol udp
router (config)# ip forward-protocol spanning-tree
router (config)# ip forward-protocol turbo flood
router (config)# exit
router#
