About This Manual

This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco Protocol Translator Configuration and Reference manual. It also lists related Cisco publications.

Document Objectives

This manual provides information necessary to use and configure Cisco protocol translator products, including making network connections and system, interface, and network configuration.

This publication addresses customers responsible for planning, managing, and analyzing internetworks, including network managers, operators, and system administrators. They should have prior networking experience, and be familiar with their own network topologies. This publication also addresses users making network connections.

Document Organization

This publication is divided into five main parts. Each part, separated by dividers, is comprised of chapters describing related tasks or functions as follows:

Part 1, "System Introduction," contains an overview of the Cisco protocol translator, information about first-time startup, and descriptions of the Cisco EXEC command interpreter and command use.
Part 2, "System Use," contains procedures for using the protocol translator to make one-step and two-step protocol translation connections and to connect to hosts. This part of the manual is directed to users who will be using the protocol translator to make connections and translate packets.
Part 3, "System Configuration and Management," contains information for configuring and managing the protocol translator global system parameters and asynchronous serial lines. This part of the manual is directed to the system administrator who will be configuring and maintaining the protocol translator.
Part 4, "Interface Configuration and Management," contains information for configuring the interfaces supported by the protocol translator, and is directed to the system administrator.
Part 5, "Transmission Protocols," contains chapters that provide information and procedures for configuring and managing the transmission protocols available with the protocol translator. This part of the manual is directed to system administrators who will configure the protocol translator for its particular tasks.
"Appendixes" includes an ASCII chart, a technical brief describing regular expressions to use for pattern-matching operations, and a list of recommended documents for protocol translator users and system administrators.

This manual uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information.

Command descriptions use these conventions:

Commands and keywords are in boldface.
Variables for which you supply values are in italics.
Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar (|).

Samples use these conventions:

Terminal sessions are printed in a screen font.
Information you enter is in a boldface screen font.
Nonprinting characters are shown in angle brackets (<>).
Information the system displays is in screen font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.

Caution Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage or loss of data.
