This chapter provides information on the Catalyst 2820 series Ethernet switches. The information is organized into the following sections:
The Catalyst 2820 series of Ethernet switches combines high-speed configuration flexibility with exceptional affordability for workgroup applications. These best-of-class switches are ideal for Ethernet workgroups and individual users requiring increased performance and 100BaseT, FDDI, or ATM connectivity to servers and backbones at a very low cost per port.

ATM support has been added to the Catalyst 2820 series with the introduction of two ATM modules, the ATM OC-3 multimode fiber module and the ATM OC-3 UTP module.
The Catalyst 2820 series consists of two models, the Catalyst 2822 with a 2K address cache, and the Catalyst 2828 with an 8K address cache.
Figure 152 and Figure 153 show the Catalyst 2820 series Ethernet switches. Both models in the series look the same and have the same dimensions. Table 99 lists a summary of the Catalyst 2820 series features, and Table 100 lists the environmental specifications.

The Catalyst 2820 series switches include the following features:
- 25 switched Ethernet ports (24 10BaseT and one AUI)
- The 10BaseT ports use RJ-45 connectors to connect to single workstations, 10BaseT hubs, or any 10BaseT-compatible device. The attached devices use standard 10BaseT adapters and wiring. Port 25, located on the back panel, supports an AUI connection for attachment to a thick coaxial, a thin coaxial, or a fiber-optic media transceiver.
- Two high-speed expansion slots supporting 100BaseT, FDDI, and ATM modules
- The high-speed expansion slots are compatible with Catalyst 2820 series field-installable modules and provide high-bandwidth connections to backbones, servers, and other high-performance devices. Each expansion slot is internally switched to all other Catalyst 2820 series ports.
- Multiple MAC address support for shared address cache for all 27 ports
- Two models are available--choose between 2048- or 8192-address cache.
- CollisionFree operation for full-duplex 100BaseT, providing up to 200-Mbps bandwidth and extended distances using fiber cabling.
- CiscoWorks device-management support
- IEEE 802.1d Spanning-Tree Protocol
- Up to 320-Mbps maximum forwarding bandwidth and 450,000 packets per second (pps) aggregate packet-forwarding rate
- Shared memory architecture with 3-MB packet buffer
- Supporting connection to a redundant power supply
- Telnet and SNMP support for in-band management and a menu-driven, out-of-band management console
- Support for four groups of RMON (EtherStats, EtherHistory, alarms, events)
- SwitchProbe analyzer port for attachment of external RMON probe or network analyzer
- Up to four port-configurable virtual LANs (VLANs)
- Cisco Group Management Protocol (CGMP)
- CGMP enables a switch to dynamically and selectively forward routed IP multicast traffic to target multimedia end stations, reducing overall network traffic
- Port security to prevent unauthorized access to the network
- Flooding controls
- Broadcast storm control
This section describes the module options available for the Catalyst 2820 series Ethernet switches.
The field-installable modules for the Catalyst 2820 series Ethernet switches provide a choice of 100BaseT Fast Ethernet, FDDI, or ATM connections supporting Category 5 UTP and fiber-optic cabling. These modules, which can be used in any combination, provide high-speed configuration, wiring, and backbone flexibility. Table 101 lists the Catalyst 2820 series100BaseT, FDDI, and ATM module options.

The 100BaseT, FDDI, and ATM field-installable modules plug directly into the high-speed expansion slots on the Catalyst 2820 series switches, providing you with the flexibility to change your network configuration while preserving your investment in the base switch. The hot-swappable design lets you install new modules while the switch is operational, minimizing network downtime and allowing upgrades in the field.

The new ATM modules offer a 155.52-Mbps data rate compatible with the SONET STS-3c physical layer, full-duplex operation, field-upgradable firmware, and AtmDirector management support.
This section discusses software configuration and management for the Catalyst 2820 series switches.
You can configure and manage a Catalyst 2820 series switch using CiscoWorks Windows or any other SNMP-compatible management station, or you can connect an ASCII terminal to the switch via the EIA/TIA-232 port and use the management console. The management console is also accessible via Telnet. SMT-compatible workstations can support installed Catalyst 2820 series FDDI modules.
- The management console provides a menu-driven interface for configuring and monitoring your network. The application is password-protected and locks out a user who fails to enter the password within a definable number of attempts. In such a case, the network administrator can be alerted via in-band management. Most of the statistics and information generated by the switch are available through the management console. You can continue to use it even when the network is down.
- The Catalyst 2820 series is fully manageable by any SNMP-compatible management station. The product supports all pertinent SNMP MIB II variables, the 802.1d bridge MIB, and a comprehensive set of MIB extensions designed for maximum support of the switch's hub and switching capabilities. The Catalyst 2820 series also supports the FDDI MIB and the MIB supporting Catalyst 2820 series modules.
- The Catalyst 2820 series SNMP MIBs are supplied in ASCII format for compiling into any SNMP network management system using a general MIB browser. You can display switch information from the following network management platforms:
- Castle Rock SNMPc
- Novell NMS
- HP OpenView
- SunNet Manager
- You can use the CiscoWorks graphical user interface to configure your Catalyst 2820 series switches and to generate the same statistics that are available through the management console.
- The Catalyst 2820 series ATM modules support AtmDirector for network management.
Table 102 lists the product numbers you can use to order Catalyst 2820 series switches.
