Port Adapters and Service Adapters for the Cisco 7000 Family

Port Adapters and Service Adapters for the Cisco 7000 Family

This chapter provides information about the port adapters and service adapters common to the Cisco 7000 family. The information is organized into the following sections:

Product Overview

The Cisco 7200 series routers support ATM, 100VG-AnyLAN, Ethernet 10BaseT and 10BaseFL, Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX, Token Ring, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI), and synchronous serial media.

The Cisco 7200 series routers support multiprotocol, multimedia routing and bridging with a wide variety of protocols and any combination of ATM, ATM-Circuit Emulation Services (ATM-CES), Ethernet 10BaseT and 10BaseFL, Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX, Token Ring, FDDI, HSSI, ISDN PRI and BRI, and synchronous serial media. Network interfaces reside on port and service adapters that provide a connection between the routers' Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) buses and external networks. Port and service adapters can be placed in any available port adapter slot, in any desired combination.

Port Adapters and Service Adapters

The following sections describe the current port adapters and service adapters available for the Cisco 7000 family.

ATM OC3

The ATM OC3 port adapters are single-port (SC duplex connectors), OC-3c (155 Mbps) ATM port adapters for the Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers. The ATM OC3 port adapters are intended for campus, private network, and intra-POP ATM applications with fiber cable lengths up to 15 km. Cisco IOS Release 11.1(9)CA is required for the ATM OC3 port adapters.

Two models of the ATM OC3 port adapter are available:

ISDN BRI

The ISDN BRI port adapters provide ISDN BRI interfaces for connecting Cisco 7200 series routers to an ISDN wide-area network through an NT1 device. Each interface consists of two B channels that can transmit and receive data at the rate of 64 kbps, full-duplex, and one D channel that can transmit and receive data at the rate of 16 kbps, full-duplex.

Two models of the ISDN BRI port adapter are available:

Note The ISDN BRI port adapters are only available for Cisco 7200 series routers.

1 The cables provide for all eight ports within a single cable (octopus cable).

Note All port adapters not listed in
Table 21 require cables supplied by the user; Cisco Systems does not provide cables. All cables not supplied by Cisco Systems, but that are used with Cisco products, are available from commercial cable vendors.
