This chapter provides information about the port adapters and service adapters common to the Cisco 7000 family. The information is organized into the following sections:
The Cisco 7200 series routers support ATM, 100VG-AnyLAN, Ethernet 10BaseT and 10BaseFL, Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX, Token Ring, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI), and synchronous serial media.
The Cisco 7200 series routers support multiprotocol, multimedia routing and bridging with a wide variety of protocols and any combination of ATM, ATM-Circuit Emulation Services (ATM-CES), Ethernet 10BaseT and 10BaseFL, Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX, Token Ring, FDDI, HSSI, ISDN PRI and BRI, and synchronous serial media. Network interfaces reside on port and service adapters that provide a connection between the routers' Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) buses and external networks. Port and service adapters can be placed in any available port adapter slot, in any desired combination.
The following sections describe the current port adapters and service adapters available for the Cisco 7000 family.

The ATM OC3 port adapters are single-port (SC duplex connectors), OC-3c (155 Mbps) ATM port adapters for the Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers. The ATM OC3 port adapters are intended for campus, private network, and intra-POP ATM applications with fiber cable lengths up to 15 km. Cisco IOS Release 11.1(9)CA is required for the ATM OC3 port adapters.
Two models of the ATM OC3 port adapter are available:
Figure 4 shows the ATM OC3 single-mode intermediate reach port adapter, and Figure 5 shows the ATM OC3 multimode port adapter.

The ISDN BRI port adapters provide ISDN BRI interfaces for connecting Cisco 7200 series routers to an ISDN wide-area network through an NT1 device. Each interface consists of two B channels that can transmit and receive data at the rate of 64 kbps, full-duplex, and one D channel that can transmit and receive data at the rate of 16 kbps, full-duplex.
Two models of the ISDN BRI port adapter are available:
Figure 6 shows the 4-port ISDN BRI port adapter, and Figure 7 shows the 8-port ISDN BRI port adapter.

The channelized T1/ISDN PRI port adapter provides up to two channelized T1 or ISDN PRI interfaces. Each interface can transmit and receive data bidirectionally at the T1 rate of 1.544 Mbps. The channelized T1/ISDN PRI port adapter is available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.

The Ethernet 10BaseT port adapters provide IEEE 802.3 Ethernet 10BaseT interfaces. Each interface allows a maximum bandwidth of 10 Mbps, for a maximum aggregate bandwidth of 40 Mbps. All ports run at line (wire) speed. The Ethernet 10BaseT port adapters are available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.

The Ethernet 10BaseFL port adapter provides up to five IEEE 802.3 Ethernet 10BaseFL interfaces. Each interface allows a maximum bandwidth of 10 Mbps, for a maximum aggregate bandwidth of 50 Mbps, half-duplex. Each interface uses two multimode (ST) receptacles for receive (RX) and transmit (TX). All five ports run at line (wire) speed. The Ethernet 10BaseFL port adapter is available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.
Figure 13 shows the Ethernet 10BaseFL port adapter (PA-5EFL).

The Fast Ethernet port adapters provide a 100-Mbps, 100BaseT Fast Ethernet interface. Both full-duplex and half-duplex operation are supported for the Fast Ethernet port adapters. The Fast Ethernet port adapters are available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.
There are two models of the Fast Ethernet 100BaseT port adapters:
Figure 14 shows the Fast Ethernet 100BaseTX port adapter, and Figure 15 shows the Fast Ethernet 100BaseFX port adapter.

The PA-4T+ enhanced 4-port synchronous serial port adapter provides up to four of the following electrical interfaces: EIA/TIA-232, EIA/TIA-449, EIA-530. X.21, and V.35. Each interface complies with its specific interface specifications. The cable attached to each synchronous serial port adapter's interface ports determines its type (EIA/TIA-232, and so forth) and its mode (DCE or DTE). The enhanced 4-port synchronous serial port adapters are available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.
Figure 16 shows the enhanced synchronous serial port adapter.

The synchronous serial V.35 port adapter provides up to eight V.35 synchronous serial interfaces through a single port that has a 200-pin, Molex receptacle. Each interface provides full-duplex operation at T1 (1.544 Mbps) and E1 (2.048 Mbps) speeds. The synchronous serial V.35 port adapters are available for Cisco 7500 series, Cisco 7000 series, and Cisco 7200 series routers.
