Cisco LocalDirector

Product Overview

Cisco Systems' LocalDirector is an integrated solution with a secure real-time embedded operating system that intelligently load-balances Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) traffic across multiple servers. Appearing as one "virtual" server, it delivers optimized performance by distributing client requests across a cluster of servers. As a result, it dramatically reduces the cost of providing large-scale Internet services and IP applications.

LocalDirector's Session Distribution Algorithm library provides a flexible and adaptable method of directing TCP/IP traffic. It allows users to intelligently distribute load and maximize the number of TCP/IP connections a server farm can manage. It also allows you to direct TCP/IP traffic to different servers based on service, speed, or quantity of connections. A maximum connection limit can be set to ensure that servers do not fail from traffic overload.

Ideal for mission-critical applications, LocalDirector provides a highly redundant, fault-tolerant server system. Servers can be automatically and transparently placed in or out of service, and LocalDirector itself is equipped with a hot standby failover mechanism eliminating all points of failure for the server system. Virtual and real servers can back up one another.

LocalDirector is a high-performance Internet appliance with over 60-Mbps throughput. It supports up to 8000 virtual IP addresses and domain names. It can also direct traffic to 8000 servers with any collection of heterogeneous hardware platforms and operating systems, and it efficiently handles over 700,000 simultaneous TCP/IP connections. LocalDirector is effortless to set up with no network address changes, which frees up valuable system administration time.
