This chapter discusses the objectives, audience, organization and conventions of the Cisco 1005 User Guide.

Document Objectives

This publication explains how to install, configure, and troubleshoot the Cisco 1005 router.

Audience

This publication is designed for the person installing the router, who should be familiar with this type of equipment.

For more advanced configuration applications, refer to Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) configuration guides and command references.

Document Organization

The major sections of this publication are as follows:

• Chapter 1, "Overview of the Cisco 1005," describes the features of the router and lists its physical specifications.

• Chapter 2, "Installing the Cisco 1005," includes safety recommendations and provides a list of tools and parts required, instructions for wall-mounting the router, connecting to a network and powering on the router, and checking your installation.

• Chapter 3, "Configuring the Cisco 1005," provides initial software configuration instructions. This chapter provides just enough configuration information to get the router up and running.

• Chapter 4, "Troubleshooting the Cisco 1005," explains how to read the LEDs to troubleshoot problems.

• Appendix A, "Cable Pinouts," provides port and cable pinouts.

• Appendix B, "Translated Safety Warnings," repeats in multiple languages the warnings in this publication.

• Commands and keywords are in boldface font.

• Variables for which you supply values are in italic font.

• Elements in square brackets are optional.

• Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar ( | ).

Examples use these conventions:

• Terminal sessions are in screen font.

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.

• Nonprinting characters are shown in angle brackets (< >).

• Information the system displays is in screen font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
