This document describes how to install and configure the following Integrated Services Digital Network-Basic Rate Interface (ISDN-BRI) WAN interface cards for the Cisco 3600 series and Cisco 1600 series of modular access routers:

You can distinguish between older and newer models of a BRI WAN interface card by the location and labeling of the LEDS, and the number and location of cutouts in the faceplate.

Unless specifically identified, references to BRI WAN interface cards in this configuration note include all four cards.

On Cisco 3600 series routers, the serial WAN interface card fits into a network module that has slots for WAN cards, such as the 1-Ethernet 2-WAN card slot network module (Cisco product number NM-1E2W), the 2-Ethernet 2-WAN card slot network module (Cisco product number NM-2E2W), or the 1-Ethernet 1-Token Ring 2-WAN card slot network module (Cisco product number NM-1E1R2W). These network modules are referred to in general as 2-slot network modules or base modules. The network module installs into the router chassis. You cannot install a WAN interface card directly into a Cisco 3600 series router chassis. Cisco 3600 series routers accept both newer and older models of BRI WAN interface cards.

On Cisco 1600 series routers, the WAN interface card fits directly into the router chassis. The 1600 series accepts only the newer model of BRI WAN interface cards.

Use this document in conjunction with your router installation and configuration guide, the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information document for your router, and the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) configuration guides and command references. If you have questions or need help, refer to the section "Obtaining Service and Support" later in this document for further information.

Software Requirements

Newer BRI WAN interface cards require Cisco IOS Release 11.2(4)XA, 11.2(5)P, or later. Older BRI WAN interface cards require Cisco IOS Release 11.1(6) or later.

Safety with Electricity

Warning Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.
Warning  To avoid electric shock, do not connect safety extra-low voltage (SELV) circuits to telephone-network voltage (TNV) circuits. LAN ports contain SELV circuits, and WAN ports contain TNV circuits. Both LAN and WAN ports may use RJ-45 connectors. Use caution when connecting cables.
Warning Hazardous network voltages are present in WAN ports regardless of whether power to the router is OFF or ON. To avoid electric shock, use caution when working near WAN ports. When detaching cables, detach the end away from the router first.
Warning The ISDN connection is regarded as a source of voltage that should be inaccessible to user contact. Do not attempt to tamper with or open any public telephone operator (PTO)-provided equipment or connection hardware. Any hardwired connection (other than by a nonremovable, connect-one-time-only plug) must be made only by PTO staff or suitably trained engineers.

Follow these guidelines when working on equipment powered by electricity:

Warning Before opening the chassis, disconnect the telephone-network cables to avoid contact with telephone-network voltages.
Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.
Warning Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply even when the power switch is OFF and the power cord is connected. For systems without a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply when the power cord is connected.

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. It occurs when electronic printed circuit cards are improperly handled and can result in complete or intermittent failures. Always follow ESD prevention procedures when removing and replacing cards. Ensure that the router chassis is electrically connected to earth ground. Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ensuring that it makes good skin contact. Connect the clip to an unpainted surface of the chassis frame to safely channel unwanted ESD voltages to ground. To properly guard against ESD damage and shocks, the wrist strap and cord must operate effectively. If no wrist strap is available, ground yourself by touching the metal part of the chassis.

Caution For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap, which should be between 1 and 10 megohms (Mohm).

Installing a BRI WAN Interface Card in a Cisco 3600 Series Router

This section explains how to install a BRI WAN interface card in a Cisco 3600 series router. To install the card in a Cisco 1600 series router, see the section "Installing a BRI WAN Interface Card in a Cisco 1600 Series Router" later in this document.

Required Tools and Equipment

You need the following tools and equipment to install a WAN interface card in a Cisco 3600 series router:

WAN Interface Card Slot Assignments

A 2-slot network module for Cisco 3600 series routers has two slots for installing WAN interface cards. These slots are numbered W0, on the right, and W1, on the left. Some WAN interface cards are keyed to be installed in slot W1 only. Cards without a key fit into either slot.

Newer BRI WAN interface cards do not have a key and fit into either slot; you can install two newer cards in the same network module, one in each slot. Older cards do have a key and fit into slot W1 only. You can install only one older card in a network module.


Note Do not install a newer BRI WAN interface card in the same network module as an older model of this card.

Inserting the Card into the Network Module

Caution WAN interface cards do not support online insertion and removal (hot swap). Before inserting a WAN interface card into a 2-slot network module that is already installed in the router chassis, you must turn OFF electrical power and disconnect network cables.

The following instructions apply only to installing a WAN interface card in a 2-slot network module. If you need to install the 2-slot module in a chassis slot, see your router installation and configuration guide or the 2-slot module configuration note.

Time Saver You can install WAN interface cards either before or after mounting the router, whichever is more convenient. You can install the card in the base module either before or after installing the base module in the router chassis.

Note Do not install a BRI WAN interface card in the same chassis as an ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI) network module. This configuration is not supported.

Follow this procedure to insert the WAN interface card into the 2-slot network module:

Step 1 If the 2-slot network module has already been installed in the router chassis, turn OFF power to the router. However, to channel ESD voltages to ground, do not unplug the power cable. Remove all network interface cables, including telephone cables, from the rear panel.

The following warning applies to routers that use a DC power supply:


Warning Before performing any of the following procedures, ensure that power is removed from the DC circuit. To ensure that all power is OFF, locate the circuit breaker on the panel board that services the DC circuit, switch the circuit breaker to the OFF position, and tape the switch handle of the circuit breaker in the OFF position.

Step 2 Using either a number 1 Phillips screwdriver or a small flat-blade screwdriver, remove the blank filler panel from the slot in the 2-slot network module where you plan to install the card. Save the blank panel for future use.

Step 3 Align the card with the guides in the 2-slot network module and slide it gently into the WAN interface card slot. (Figure 5 shows the newer BRI S/T card as an example.)

Step 4 Push the card into place until you feel its edge connector mate securely with the connector in the 2-slot network module.

Step 5 Fasten the card's captive mounting screws into the holes in the 2-slot network module faceplate, using the Phillips or flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 6 If the router was previously running, reinstall the network interface cables and turn ON power to the router.

The following warning applies to routers that use a DC power supply:


Warning After wiring the DC power supply, remove the tape from the circuit breaker switch handle and reinstate power by moving the handle of the circuit breaker to the ON position.
Warning This equipment is intended to be grounded. Ensure that the host is connected to earth ground during normal use.

Blank WAN Interface Card Panels

If the 2-slot network module is configured with fewer than two WAN interface cards, make sure that blank panels fill the open base module slots to provide proper airflow. (See Figure 6.)

Installing a BRI WAN Interface Card in a Cisco 1600 Series Router

This section explains how to install a newer BRI WAN interface card in a Cisco 1601 or Cisco 1602 router. To install the card in a Cisco 3600 series router, see the section "Installing a BRI WAN Interface Card in a Cisco 3600 Series Router" earlier in this document.


Note You cannot install a newer BRI WAN interface card in a Cisco 1603 or Cisco 1604 router. You cannot install an older BRI WAN interface card in any Cisco 1600 series router.

Required Tools and Equipment

You need the following tools and equipment to install a WAN interface card in a Cisco 1600 series router:

Inserting the Card in the Router

Caution WAN interface cards do not support online insertion and removal (hot swap). Before inserting a WAN interface card into the router chassis, you must turn OFF electrical power and disconnect network cables.
Time Saver You can install WAN interface cards either before or after mounting the router, whichever is more convenient.

Follow this procedure to install the WAN interface card in the router:

Step 1 Turn OFF power to the router, and disconnect the cable from the power socket (labeled 14 VDC) on the rear panel. Remove all network interface cables, including telephone cables, from the rear panel.

Step 2 Using either a number 1 Phillips screwdriver or a small flat-blade screwdriver, remove the blank filler panel from the WAN interface card slot. (See Figure 7.) Save the blank panel for future use.

Step 3 Align the card with the guides and slide it gently into the WAN interface card slot. (See Figure 8.)

Step 4 Push the card into place until you feel its edge connector mate securely with the connector in the router chassis.

Step 5 Fasten the card's captive mounting screws into the chassis, using the Phillips or flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 6 If the router was previously running, reinstall the network interface cables and turn ON power to the router.

Connecting the WAN Interface Card to the Network

After you install the BRI WAN interface card in the WAN card slot network module and install the network module in the router, use the appropriate cable to connect the BRI card to your WAN.

To connect a BRI S/T WAN interface card, use a straight-through RJ-45-to-RJ-45 cable to connect the card's RJ-45 connector to an NT1 device. (See Figure 9.)

To connect a BRI U WAN interface card, connect a straight-through RJ-45-to-RJ-45 cable directly to your ISDN outlet. (See Figure 10.)

BRI WAN Interface Card Pinout

Table 1 shows the pinout for the BRI RJ-45 connector. Pins 1, 2, 7, and 8 are not used.

BRI WAN Interface Card LEDs

BRI S/T WAN interface cards have three LEDs, shown in Figure 11 for the newer card and Figure 12 for the older card, and described in Table 2. The B1 and B2 LEDs indicate call activity on the two ISDN-BRI B-channels. The OK LED indicates that the ISDN port has synchronized with the central office switch (the D-channel is active).

BRI U WAN interface cards also have three LEDs, shown in Figure 13 for the newer card and Figure 14 for the older card, and described in Table 3. The B1 and B2 LEDs indicate call activity on the two ISDN-BRI B-channels. The NT1 LED indicates synchronization status of the NT1.

Configuring the BRI Interface

Whenever you install a new WAN interface card, or if you want to change the configuration of an existing interface, you must configure the interface. If you replace a card that was already configured, the router recognizes it and brings up the interface in the existing configuration.

Before you configure an interface, have the following information available:

Time Saver Obtain this information from your system administrator or network plan before you begin router configuration.

You can configure the new interface and other router parameters by using any of the following methods:

These procedures are explained in the following sections. They are the same for older and newer versions of the BRI WAN interface card. If you have questions or need help, refer to the section "Obtaining Service and Support" later in this document for further information.

Both configuration mode and the System Configuration Dialog require you to enter the ISDN switch type. These switch types are shown in Table 4.

Configuration Mode

You can configure the BRI interface on your BRI WAN interface card manually, by entering Cisco IOS commands on the command line. This method, called configuration mode, provides the greatest power and flexibility.

Before you begin, disconnect all WAN cables from the router to keep it from trying to run the AutoInstall process. The router tries to run AutoInstall whenever you power it ON if there is a WAN connection on both ends and the router does not have a valid configuration file stored in nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM) (for instance, when you add a new interface). It can take several minutes for the router to determine that AutoInstall is not connected to a remote Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) host.

To enter configuration mode, follow this procedure:

Step 1 Connect a console to the router. If you need instructions for connecting a console, refer to the installation chapter of your router installation and configuration guide. Power up the router.

Step 2 If the current configuration is no longer valid, after about a minute you see the following prompt:

Answer no. You now enter the normal operating mode of the router.


Step 3 After a few seconds you see the user EXEC prompt (Router>). Type enable and the password to enter enable (privileged EXEC) mode:

Configuration changes can be made only in enable mode. The prompt changes to the privileged EXEC (enable) prompt (Router#):


Step 4 Enter the config terminal command to enter configuration mode:

The router enters global configuration mode, indicated by the Router(config)# prompt.


Step 5 Enter an ISDN switch type from Table 4 earlier in this document, for example:

Step 6 If you have not configured the router before, or want to change the configuration, configure global parameters, passwords, network management, and routing protocols. In this example, IP routing, AppleTalk routing, and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) routing are all enabled:

For complete information about global configuration commands, refer to the Cisco IOS configuration guides and command references.


Step 7 Select the BRI interface to configure:

The prompt changes again to show that you are in interface configuration mode.


Step 8 Configure routing protocols on the interface. (You must have previously enabled these protocols as part of global configuration.) In this example, IP, AppleTalk, and IPX are being configured on the BRI interface:

Step 9 If your router has more than one BRI interface, enter the exit command to return to the Router(config)# prompt. Repeat Step 7 and Note of this procedure to configure the next BRI interface.

Step 10 By default, a Cisco 3600 series router allocates 25 percent of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) to shared memory (used for data transmitted or received by network modules and WAN interface cards). If your router includes 16 or more ISDN BRI interfaces, you must increase the amount of shared memory by entering the memory-size iomem command. The following example increases shared memory from 25 percent to 40 percent:

Step 11 When you finish configuring interfaces, exit configuration mode and return to the enable prompt by pressing Ctrl-Z. To see the current operating configuration, including any changes you just made, enter the show running-config command:

To see the configuration currently stored in NVRAM, enter the show startup-config command at the enable prompt.


Step 12 The results of the show running-config and show startup-config commands differ from each other if you have made changes to the configuration, but have not yet written them to NVRAM. To write your changes to NVRAM, making them permanent, enter the copy running-config startup-config command at the enable prompt:

The router is now configured to boot in the new configuration.


AutoInstall

The AutoInstall process is designed to configure the router automatically after it connects to your WAN. For AutoInstall to work properly, a TCP/IP host on your network must be configured to provide the configuration files. The TCP/IP host can reside anywhere on the network if the following two conditions are met:

This functionality is coordinated by your system administrator at the TCP/IP host site. You should not try to use AutoInstall unless the required files have been installed on the TCP/IP host.

Follow this procedure to prepare your router for the AutoInstall process:

Step 1 Connect the router to the WAN, following the instructions in the section "Connecting the WAN Interface Card to the Network" earlier in this document.

Step 2 Turn ON power to the router.

The router loads the operating system image from Flash memory. If the remote end of the WAN connection is connected and properly configured, the AutoInstall process begins.


Step 3 If AutoInstall succeeds, you should write the configuration data to the router's NVRAM. To do this, enter the copy running-config startup-config command at the Router# prompt:

System Configuration Dialog

You can configure the router manually using the System Configuration Dialog facility. Unlike configuration mode, the System Configuration Dialog prompts you for each response.

Before you begin, disconnect all WAN cables from the router to keep it from trying to run the AutoInstall process. The router tries to run AutoInstall whenever you power it ON if there is a WAN connection on both ends and the router does not have a configuration file in NVRAM. It can take several minutes for the router to determine that AutoInstall is not connected to a remote TCP/IP host.

This section shows a sample configuration using the System Configuration Dialog. You should enter values appropriate for your router and network.

Many prompts in the System Configuration Dialog include default answers, shown in square brackets following the question. Enter your response, or press Return to accept the default answer.

You can request help at any time by entering a question mark (?) at a System Configuration Dialog prompt.

Follow this procedure to configure the router using the System Configuration Dialog:

Step 1 Connect a console to the router. If you need instructions for connecting a console, refer to your router installation and configuration guide. Power up the router.

Step 2 If the current configuration is no longer valid, after about a minute you see the following prompt:

Press Return or enter yes to enter the System Configuration Dialog.


Step 3 When the System Configuration Dialog asks whether you want to view the current interface summary, press Return or enter yes:

Step 4 If you have not configured the router before, or want to change the configuration, you should now configure global parameters, passwords, network management, and routing protocols. Refer to the procedures in the Cisco IOS configuration guides and command references. Press Return if you want to accept the default values.

When you reach the following prompt, enter an ISDN switch type from Table 4 earlier in this document:


Step 5 The System Configuration Dialog prompts you to configure network interfaces. When you reach the first BRI interface, determine which protocols you want on the interface and enter the appropriate responses. (You must have previously enabled these protocols as part of global configuration.) In the following example, the interface is being configured for IP, AppleTalk, and IPX:

Step 6 If your router has more than one BRI interface, repeat this procedure to configure the next BRI interface.

Step 7 The configuration you entered is displayed as a command script and you are asked if you want to use it. If you enter no, the information you just entered is discarded and you can begin the configuration again. If you enter yes, the configuration is saved in the startup configuration:

The configuration is saved. If you added an interface, the router reboots in the new configuration when you press Return.


Configuring the ISDN BRI Line

Before using a router with an ISDN BRI interface, you must order a correctly configured ISDN BRI line from your local telecommunications service provider.

The ordering process varies from provider to provider and from country to country. However, here are some general guidelines:

ISDN BRI Provisioning by Switch Type

ISDN BRI provisioning refers to the types of services provided by the ISDN BRI line. Although provisioning is performed by your ISDN BRI service provider, you must tell the provider what you want.

Table 5 lists the provisioning you should order for the router based on switch type.

Defining ISDN Service Profile Identifiers

Some service providers assign service profile identifiers (SPIDs) to define the services subscribed to by an ISDN device. If your service provider requires SPIDs, your ISDN device cannot place or receive calls until it sends a valid SPID to the service provider when initializing the connection. A SPID is usually a seven-digit telephone number plus some optional numbers, but service providers may use different numbering schemes. SPIDs have significance at the local access ISDN interface only; remote routers are never sent the SPID.

Currently, only DMS-100 and NI-1 switch types require SPIDs. Two SPIDs are assigned for the DMS-100 switch type, one for each B channel. The AT&T 5ESS switch type may support SPIDs, but we recommend that you set up that ISDN service without SPIDs.

If your service provider assigns you SPIDs, you must define these SPIDs on the router. To define SPIDs and the local directory number (LDN) on the router for both ISDN BRI B channels, use the following isdn spid commands:

Note Although the LDN is an optional parameter in the command, you may need to enter it so the router can answer calls made to the second directory number.

An FCC-compliant cord and modular plug is provided with this equipment. This equipment is designed for connection to the telephone network or premises wiring using a compatible modular jack that is Part 68 compliant. See the installation instructions for details.

This equipment cannot be used on telephone company-provided coin service. Connection to party line service is subject to state tariffs.

If this equipment causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in advance that it may be necessary to temporarily discontinue service. If advance notice is not practical, the telephone company will notify you as soon as possible. Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.
