About This Guide

This section discusses the objectives, intended audience, and organization of the Bridge Management Module Installation and Configuration Guide and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and information.

Audience and Scope

This manual is for the networking professional installing and maintaining the Bridge Management Module (BMM) in the FastHub 316T and FastHub 316C repeaters; hereafter, both are referred to as the FastHub when discussing features common to both. It is assumed that readers of this manual are familiar with the concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area networking.

Document Organization

This manual is organized as follows:

Chapter 1, "Overview," describes the Bridge Management Module (BMM) hardware and software features.

Chapter 2, "Installation," outlines the preinstallation and cabling guidelines and includes sample configurations. This chapter also contains complete installation and connection instructions.

Chapter 3, "Out-of-Band Management," is a menu-by menu explanation of the management console. This application allows you to configure and display statistics for the FastHub and BMM.

Chapter 4, "In-Band Management," describes how to use BOOTP/DHCP to assign an IP address. The chapter lists the Management Information Base (MIB) objects for configuring and managing a FastHub using a BMM.

Chapter 5, "Troubleshooting," describes some problems that might arise and their recommended solutions.

Appendix A, "Technical Specifications," lists the physical characteristics, environmental requirements, and power specifications of the BMM. The appendix also provides a list of agency approvals.

Appendix B, "Connectors and Cables," details the physical characteristics of BMM connectors and their associated cabling. The appendix also provides instructions for connecting the BMM console to a PC, terminal, or modem.

Appendix C, "Translated Safety Warnings," repeats in multiple languages the warnings in this guide.

Document Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:

Command descriptions use these conventions:

• The symbol ^ represents the key labeled Ctrl. For example, the key combination ^X in a screen display means hold down the Ctrl key while you press the X key.

• Commands and keywords are in boldface font.

• Arguments for which you supply values are shown in italics.

• Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.

• Alternative or optional keywords are shown in bold and grouped in square brackets ([ ]) and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).

• Required keywords are grouped in braces ({}) and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).

Examples use these conventions:

• Terminal sessions and system displays are in screen font.

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.

Notes, cautions, and warnings use the following conventions and symbols:

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.

Caution  Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents.
