This section discusses the objectives, intended audience, and organization of the FastHub 300 Series Installation and Configuration Guide and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and information.
Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. This manual is for the networking professional installing and maintaining the FastHub 316T and FastHub 316C repeaters; hereafter, both are referred to as the FastHub when discussing features common to both. It is assumed that readers of this manual are familiar with the concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area networking.
This manual is organized as follows:
Chapter 1, "Overview," describes the FastHub features and associated benefits.
Chapter 2, "Installing the FastHub," contains preinstallation guidelines and procedures for installing the FastHub in a rack or on a desktop or table. Also included are procedures for installing the optional port expansion module and the network management module (NMM). The "Building a Hub Stack" section discusses the benefits of interconnecting hubs and provides a detailed interconnection procedure.
Chapter 3, "Making Network Connections," provides cabling guidelines for determining how the FastHub can best fit into your environment. This chapter also describes how to connect the FastHub to network devices.
Chapter 4, "Out-of-Band Management," provides information on configuring and managing the FastHub using the out-of-band management option (this option requires the NMM).
Chapter 5, "In-Band Management," summarizes information appearing in the FastHub 300 Series MIB Reference Manual. This chapter lists the actions used to manage and configure a FastHub, along with the Management Information Base (MIB) object associated with each action.
Chapter 6, "Out-of-Band Management," describes some problems that might arise and their recommended solutions.
Appendix A, "Technical Specifications," lists FastHub physical characteristics, environmental requirements, and power specifications.
Appendix B, "Connectors and Cabling," details the physical characteristics of the FastHub connectors and their associated cabling.
Appendix C, "Translated Safety Warnings," repeats in multiple languages the warnings in this guide.
