Installing Circuit Boards in the
PIX Firewall

The instructions in this document describe how to remove the top access panel from a PIX Firewall or PIX10000 and install an upgrade or spare circuit board. For configuration information, refer to the
PIX Firewall Series Configuration Guide supplied in the accessory kit with your unit.

This guide contains the following topics:

Safety Recommendations

Note Opening the PIX Firewall case does not affect your Cisco warranty.

Upgrading the PIX Firewall does not require any special tools and does not create any radio frequency leaks.

Follow these guidelines to ensure general safety:

Maintaining Safety with Electricity

Follow these guidelines when working on equipment powered by electricity:

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. ESD damage occurs when electronic components are improperly handled and can result in complete or intermittent failures.

Warning Before working on a system that has an on/off switch, turn OFF the power and unplug the power cord.
Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.
Warning Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord is connected. For systems without a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply when the power cord is connected.
Warning Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.

Opening a PIX Firewall Cabinet

If you have a PIX10000, refer to the next section for information on opening its cabinet.

To open the cabinet of a PIX Firewall:

Step 1 Read the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for the PIX Firewall Series for important safety information.

Step 2 Save the existing configuration to flash memory. For version 2, use the save command; for version 4, use the write memory command.

Step 3 Open the front access panel and power-off the unit as shown in Figure 1:

Figure 1: Opening the Front Panel Provides Access to the Power Switch

Step 4 At the back of the PIX Firewall unit, remove the power cord and if you are replacing a board, any cabling related to it.

Step 5 Remove the unit from the equipment rack and place it on a stable work surface.

Step 6 Detach the top access panel by using a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the 16 screws securing the top panel (12 on top and 4 on the rear cover flange) as shown in Figure 2:

Step 7 Remove the top access panel.

Opening a PIX10000 Cabinet

Step 1 Read the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for the PIX Firewall Series for important safety information.

Step 2 Save the existing configuration to flash memory. For version 2, use the save command; for version 4, use the write memory command.

Step 3 Power-off the unit from the rear panel.

Step 4 Remove the four screws from the top panel at the rear of the unit.

Step 5 Grasp the lid with both hands as shown in Figure 3 and pull the lid backward one inch toward the rear of the cabinet and then lift the lid straight up.

Installing Circuit Boards

Once the PIX Firewall cabinet is open, you can install circuit boards in both the PIX Firewall and PIX10000 units in a similar manner. While the illustrations that follow depict the traditional PIX Firewall unit, you can use the same procedures with the PIX10000.

Step 1 If you are replacing an existing circuit board, remove the screw that secures the board to the rear of the chassis for each board you are replacing as shown in Figure 4:

Figure 4:

Remove the Screw Holding the Board to the Rear of Chassis

Step 2 If you are replacing an existing board, remove each board and set it aside.

Step 3 Remove the new circuit board from its package.

Step 4 Insert each new board in the appropriate slot so that the mounting bracket faces the rear of the unit as shown in Figure 5:

Figure 5:

Insert the Circuit Board Into the Chassis

Install the boards so that the rightmost board is the outside interface, the next board to the left is the inside interface, and if you have an optional third interface (available only in version 4.1 or later) so that it is to the left (away from the power supply) of the inside interface.
