CiscoWorks CD Installation Instructions

This booklet describes how to install CiscoWorks' software from the distribution CD-ROM into the AIX file system. Refer to CiscoWorks on AIX Installation and Reference Guide:

For additional help during installation, use the online help offered by SMIT. For help with NetView and the CiscoWorks utilities, refer to the online help.

These instructions describe installation by mounting the CD-ROM on the file system from the local or a remote host.

Perform all tasks as the root user.

Mounting from a Local CD-ROM Drive

To mount the CD-ROM on the file system from a local CD-ROM drive, perform the following steps:


  1. Place the CD-ROM into its caddy and insert it into the local CD-ROM drive.

  2. Start SMIT, the AIX system maintenance tool, by entering:
# smit

  1. On the System Management menu, click Physical & Logical Storage, then File Systems, then Add/Change/Show Delete File Systems, then CDROM File Systems, then Add a CDROM File System.

  2. Click the "DEVICE name" List button and select the device name from the list that appears.

  3. Enter the mount point (such as /cdrom) in the mount point field.

  4. Click Do, read the output, and then click Done.

  5. Terminate SMIT by pressing F12 or by clicking Exit SMIT on the Exit menu.

  6. Mount the filesystem by entering the following at the command prompt:
hostname# smit mountfs

  1. Click the "FILE SYSTEM name" List button and select a device name from the list that appears (like /dev/cd0).

  2. In the "DIRECTORY over which to mount" field, enter the mount point (like /cdrom).

  3. Click the "TYPE of file system" List button and select cdrfs as the file system type.

  4. Set the "Mount as READ-ONLY System" field to yes.

  5. Click Do. The Mount a File System panel appears. Click Done after the mounting process is complete.

  6. Terminate SMIT by pressing F12 or by clicking Exit SMIT on the Exit menu.

Mounting from a Remote CD-ROM Drive

To install software from a device on a remote system, you must have remote access rights to that system.

On the Remote system

Perform the following steps on the remote system as the root user:


  1. Place the CD-ROM into its caddy and insert it into the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Log in as a the root user.

  3. Start SMIT, the AIX system maintenance tool, by entering:
# smit

  1. On the System Management menu, click Physical & Logical Storage, then File Systems, then Add/Change/Show Delete File Systems, then CDROM File Systems, then Add a CDROM File System.

  2. Click the "DEVICE name" List button and select the device name from the list that appears.

  3. Enter the mount point (such as /cdrom) in the mount point field.

  4. Click Do, read the output, and then click Done.

  5. Terminate SMIT by pressing F12 or by clicking Exit SMIT on the Exit menu.

  6. Enter the following at the command prompt:
hostname# smit mountfs

  1. Click the "FILE SYSTEM name" List button and select a device name from the list that appears (like /dev/cd0).

  2. In the "DIRECTORY over which to mount" field, enter the mount point (like /cdrom).

  3. Click the "TYPE of file system" List button and select cdrfs as the file system type.

  4. Set the Mount as Read-Only System field to yes.

  5. Click Do.

  6. Terminate SMIT by pressing F12 or by clicking Exit SMIT on the Exit menu.

  7. Enter smit mknfsexp at the command prompt.

  8. Enter the "PATHNAME of directory to export" (like /cdrom).

  9. Use the arrow keys to change the "Mode to Export Directory" field to read-only.

  10. Enter the appropriate information for any of the other fields.

  11. Click Do.

  12. Terminate SMIT by pressing F12 or by clicking Exit SMIT on the Exit menu.

On the Local System

Perform this step on the local system as the root user:


  1. Enter the following at the command prompt:
hostname# mount remote_hostname : remote_exported_filesystem_name local_mount_point

For example, to mount a remote filesystem named zen, enter the following at the prompt:


hostname# mount zen:/cdrom /cdrom

Proceed to "Installing CiscoWorks on NetView for AIX."

Installing CiscoWorks on NetView for AIX

To install the CiscoWorks files on an AIX platform, perform the following steps as the root user:


  1. Place the CD-ROM into its caddy and insert it into the local or remote CD-ROM drive, or insert the tape into the local drive.

  2. Start SMIT by entering the following at the command prompt:
hostname# smit

  1. On the System Management panel, select Software Installation & Maintenance, then Install / Update Software, then Install / Update Selectable Software (Custom Install), then Install Software Products at Latest Available Level.

  2. On the next panel, inform SMIT about the source of CiscoWorks 3.0 software. (CiscoWorks can only be installed from a CD-ROM). Cick the List button, and then click the CD-ROM device name on which you loaded the media in Step 1.

  3. Click the Do button.

  4. Click the List button next to the "SOFTWARE to install" field. After a brief delay, the Module Selection panel appears.

  5. In the Module Selection panel, click all CiscoWorks modules in the list such that all are simultaneously highlighted,

  6. Click OK.

  7. Click the Do button.

  8. In response to the ARE YOU SURE prompt, click OK when you are sure you want to install the modules you just highlighted.

    While the animated man is running, SMIT installs the selected modules in the /usr/nms directory, and CiscoWorks modifies SMIT to allow subsequent configuration and de-installation of CiscoWorks.


    If the man raises his hands and SMIT displays OK, the process has succeeded


    If the man falls on his face, installation has failed. If the reason is not apparent, read the installation log file $HOME/smit.log or /usr/nms/install/cw_install.log and supply it to a TAC representative.



  9. Click Done.

  10. If the previous step indicated success, click the Return to System Management button and go to the chapter "Configuring CiscoWorks" in CiscoWorks on AIX Installation and Reference Guide.

    In the event of failure, terminate SMIT by pressing F12 or by clicking Exit SMIT on the Exit menu.


CD-ROM Contents

CiscoWorks on AIX, Software Release 3.0.3

Hardware Requirements

IBM RISC System/6000 workstation, Model 340 or higher; color monitor; PostScript-compatible printer; CD-ROM drive on the host or accessible remote system.
