About This Guide

This section describes the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the SwitchProbe Installation and Configuration Guide.

Objectives

This guide tells you how to install, configure, and use your Cisco SwitchProbe hardware and software to monitor and diagnose network segments. Refer to the Using TrafficDirector publication for information about using the TrafficDirector network management software with your SwitchProbe device.

Audience

This guide is designed for the individuals who install and configure the SwitchProbe device for monitoring network segments. These individuals should have a working knowledge of network operation and management in order to use this guide effectively.

Organization

The organization of this installation and configuration guide follows:

• Chapter 1, "Product Overview," tells how SwitchProbe devices are implemented on the network. It includes brief discussions about multiple interface operations, router discovery, agent routing, and the Remote Monitoring Information Base (RMON-MIB) standard.

• Chapter 2, "Physical Description," describes the physical characteristics of each SwitchProbe device. This includes the Ethernet, Token-Ring, CDDI, FDDI, and WAN interface models.

• Chapter 3, "Installation," tells you how to install and configure the SwitchProbe device. This includes descriptions of the network interfaces and configuration tasks needed to connect the SwitchProbe to the network.

• Chapter 4, "Connecting to the Network," tells you how to connect the different probes to the network.

• Chapter 5, "Command-Line Mode," tells you how to operate and configure the SwitchProbe from the command line. This includes setting parameters, enabling and disabling options, and defining IP addresses.

• Chapter 6, "Advanced Features," describes the advanced features supported by the SwitchProbe. This includes support for resource, switch, DLCI and VLAN monitoring, special agent software options, and data capture.

• Chapter 7, "Frame Relay Monitoring," tells you how to enhance performance when using your SwitchProbe device.

• Appendix A, "Specifications," lists the specifications for each SwitchProbe model.

• Appendix B,"Cable Pinouts," shows cable pinouts and their locations.

• Appendix C, "WAN and FDDI RMON Implementation," describes implementation guidelines for monitoring WAN traffic using RMON RFC 1757.

• Appendix D, "Translated Safety Warnings," provides foreign language translations of all safety warnings that appear in this guide.

Conventions

Command descriptions and screen examples use the following conventions:

boldface font	Commands and keywords.
italic font	Variables for which you supply values.
[      ]	Keywords or arguments that appear within square brackets are optional.
{ x | y | z}	A choice of required keywords appears in braces separated by vertical bars. You must select one.
screen font	Examples of information displayed on the screen.
boldface screen font	Examples of information you must enter.
[    ]	Default responses to system prompts appear in square brackets.
Note	Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to additional information and material.
**before** @@before@@ Caution **after** @@after@@	This symbol means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.
**before** @@before@@ Warning **after** @@after@@	This symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, you must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents.
