SPI Description and Sample Scripts

SPI Description and Sample Scripts

This appendix includes a description of some of the troubleshooting aspects of SPI, a sample log of an SPI upgrade to StrataView Plus, and a sample log of an SPI initial (first time) installation of StrataView Plus.

SPI Criteria

You can run SPI either normally or with options. The normal mode is intended for upgrades or initial installations. The other modes provide more detailed messages and logs for use by support personnel.

Performing a Normal Installation

  1. Load the StrataView Plus tape and runs Sun's extract_unbundled program.

  2. SPI checks initial conditions, including that you are logged in as root and that the core script files are present. SPI then gives you the choice of performing an automatic or manual installation.

  3. For an automatic installation, SPI checks for the proper operating system and the necessary script files. It also checks whether StrataView Plus is already installed and, if it is, checks the StrataView Plus version.

If the existing StrataView Plus is a newer version thanthe one you're trying to install, SPI doesn't proceed with the installation.

  4. The normal installation checks that the workstation has at least two disk drives with sufficient capacity. SPI partitions the second disk, allowing you to choose custom or default sizes for swap space and Informix database space.

  5. Then the SPI checks that there are no user or group conflicts and adds user and group accounts as necessary. If user accounts are added or changed, the user is asked for the passwords.

  6. SPI checks for Motif and, if not present, asks for the Motif tape to be loaded.

  7. SPI checks for WingZ and, if not present, asks for the WingZ tape to be loaded.

  8. SPI checks the kernel for StrataView Plus options and makes changes as required.

  9. SPI prompts for the StrataView Plus tape and extracts the StrataView Plus files.

  10. SPI checks for Informix and, if not present, asks for the Informix tape to be loaded

  11. SPI checks for the existence of online help and installs FrameViewer to view it if necessary.

  12. SPI performs some file housekeeping, moves the installation scripts and the log file to a permanent locations in /usr/users/svplus. If SPI rebuilt the kernel, it prompts you to enable SPI to do an immediate reboot of the workstation.

Troubleshooting the SPI Installation

SPI consists of a number of modules. These are:

Driver Checks status and runs the other modules
Disk Sets up partitions on secondary disk, partitions, etc.
Accounts Sets up user and group accounts
Motif Checks for and installs Motif
Wingz Checks for and installs Wingz
Kernel Checks and modifies kernel as necessary
Informix Checks for and installs Informix
StrataView Plus Checks for and installs StrataView Plus

In case there is a problems with the installation, SPI provides different levels of installation, which provide additional messages and choices for installation. The log of the installation is also available.

When SPI is first run from the tape, it stores the SPI install modules in /tmp. It moves these files and the install log to /usr/users/svplus at the completion of the installation. Thus, if there has been a problem, the install process can be run again.

The install script is invoked by moving to the /usr/users/svplus_install_unbundled.pid directory where pid is the ID of the extract_unbundled process. The normal user installation is run at level 1.For troubleshooting purposes, it can be run at level 2, level 3, etc.

To rerun the process at level 2, the following command would be entered:

Driver.pack/Install.sh -x 2
