Your StrataView Plus installation will be either a first time installation, or an upgrade. This manual is a guide to either performing an initial (first time) installation of StrataView Plus and associated software programs or upgrading an existing StrataView Plus installation. Chapter 2 provides the first time install procedure. Chapter 3 provides the upgrade procedure.
StrataView Plus Rel. 8.2 should be installed on a Sun SPARCStation 20. The Sun operating system must previously have been installed on the workstation before an initial installation of StrataView Plus can be performed. For instructions on installing the Sun operating system, refer to the appropriate Sun documentation. This documentation is not provided by StrataCom.
StrataView Plus runs under HP OpenView. If you already have HP OpenView installed on your SPARCStation, proceed with the installation of StrataView Plus. Otherwise, install the version of HP OpenView that came with StrataView Plus. For instructions on installing HP OpenView, refer to the appropriate HP documentation.
Refer to Table 1-1 for a list of the applicable procedures, depending upon whether you are performing an initial (first time) installation or an upgrade.
StrataView Plus Rel. 8.2 may be installed as either an upgrade to an existing StrataView Plus 8.0, 8.1 or 7.2 installation or as an initial installation. If the StrataView Plus release on the workstation is earlier than StrataView Plus 7.2, a complete installation must be performed. Because of changes in the database schema you will not be able to directly restore a database from a version of StrataView Plus earlier than StrataView Plus 7.2. If you have an earlier version of StrataView Plus than 7.2, check with StrataCom ISC for assistance in migrating to StrataView Plus 8.2.
StrataView Plus Rel. 8.2 may be installed on a SPARCStation 20. Currently, for new Sun workstations, the minimum recommended hard disk, memory and monitor configuration consists of two 2-Gigabyte disks, a minimum of 128 Mbytes of memory, and a 19-inch color monitor. Minimum requirements for the SPARCStation 20 are as follows:
If a single StrataView Plus NMS workstation is connected to a large network, the statistics collection performance of the Statistics Collection Manager can be markedly improved (up to 40% more I/O throughput) by adding a second SCSI-2 interface and a second external hard disk drive. The second external hard drive capacity should be 1 Gbyte or greater.
The StrataView Plus Network Management Station requires the following software elements:
The automatic StrataView Plus installer (SPI) is included on the StrataView Plus tape and can be used for most installations of StrataView Plus.
The automatic installer checks to see on which hard disk the operating system is installed and looks for a second drive to use for the StrataView Plus Informix data base. During an initial installation, the SPI will perform only necessary minor changes to the operating system disk drive. These changes include adding required user directories.
The SPI requires that the second drive be available entirely for use by StrataView Plus. It unmounts all partitions on this second disk and reformats the second disk for use by the StrataView Plus and the Informix database. StrataView Plus requires, as a minimum, 200 Mbytes of swap space. If there is not 200 Mbytes of swap space configured on the operating system drive, additional swap space is added to the second drive by the SPI.
Swap space should be two times real memory, as a minimum. The maximum amount of swap space you should allocate would be five times real memory.
If there are partitions, applications, or data on the second disk that you do not want deleted, then you may have to perform a manual installation. Call Cisco TAC for further information.
If you have not already done so, refer to the StrataView Plus Operations Manual for information on disk capacity and other statistics collection requirements relevant to planning the statistics configuration for your network.
