This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the publication Cisco 3800 Series Hardware Installation Guide.
Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up-to-date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. This guide describes currently available models in detail. It steps you through planning, site preparation, installation and configuration of the following Cisco 3800 series models: Cisco 3801 and Cisco 3803. General upgrade and field maintenance procedures are also included.
This publication is designed for the person installing the Cisco 3800 series system, who should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician. A working knowledge of Cisco IOS software is also desirable.
Note Throughout this manual, the term
installer refers to a systems administrator or network engineer.
This guide is organized as follows:
- Chapter 1, "Introducing the Cisco 3800 Series"--Describes the Cisco 3800 series models available, technical specifications, orderable modules and options, hardware, software and network management features and supported applications.
- Chapter 2, "Installing Cisco 3800 Hardware"--Describes how to install the chassis: pre-installation considerations, planning your installation, preparing the location, selecting the site, and installing the chassis on the wall or rack with special brackets.
- Chapter 3, "Installing Cisco 3800 Cards"--Describes the cards available for the Cisco 3800 product: the Combo Card and the T1/E1 and Ethernet daughter card option and the Cisco 3800-ERM option. Describes the installation procedure and how to configure dip switches for the various ports.
- Chapter 4, "Cisco 3800 Port and Trunk Pinouts"--The ports and trunks on the Combo Card are provided for custom cable manufacturing requirements.
- Appendix A, "Cisco 3800 Cable Pinouts"--The pinouts of all the cables you can order for the product.
- Appendix B, "Compliance Statements"-- Cisco 3800 series compliance text to supplement the information packet provided with the product.
- Appendix C, "Error Messages"-- Cisco 3800 known error messages with explanations. See the release notes distributed with the product for a current list of caveats and workarounds.
