About This Manual

This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco 1020 Command Reference publication.

Document Objectives

This publication provides an in-depth description of the commands necessary for configuring and maintaining your Cisco 1020 router. It describes tasks only in the context of using a particular command; it does not describe how the tasks interrelate or provide comprehensive configuration examples. It can be used as a standalone reference manual or in conjunction with the Cisco 1020 User Guide.

Audience

This publication is intended as a standalone document for experienced users who will be configuring and maintaining the Cisco 1020 and just need to reference commands. For less-experienced users who need to understand the tasks as well as the commands, it is intended as a companion guide to the Cisco 1020 User Guide.

Document Organization

This publication is divided into five chapters, describing related tasks or functions. The chapters in this publication are as follows:

Chapter 1, "Product Overview," provides an overview of the Cisco 1020 dial-on-demand router.
Chapter 2, "Privileged EXEC Commands," describes the commands used to administer the Cisco 1020, except for configuration commands.
Chapter 3, "Global Configuration Commands," describes commands used to configure the router that are not interface-specific or site-specific.
Chapter 4, "Interface Configuration Commands," describes commands used to configure specific interfaces.
Chapter 5, "Site Configuration Commands," describes commands used to configure specific sites.

Document Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information.

Command descriptions follow these conventions:

Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).

Examples follow these conventions:

Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.
Information you enter is in boldface screen font.
Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are shown in angle brackets (< >).
Information the system displays is in screen font .
Default responses are in square brackets([ ]).
Exclamation points (!) at the beginning of a line indicate a comment line.

Caution Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.

Figure 1 explains the fields on a typical command reference page.
