This publication provides international regulatory and safety compliance information for Cisco 1600 series routers. Use this publication with the installation and configuration guide that you received with your router.
All product documentation and additional literature are available on the CD-ROM that shipped with your product.

Electro-Magnetic Compatibility Compliance
The router conforms to the requirements of Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 89/336/EEC.
This product range falls within the scope of the Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (TTE) Regulations 1992 (Statutory Instrument No. 2423/1992).
However, there is currently no common technical regulation (CTR) in force that covers this particular category of equipment. Therefore, the TTE regulations do not apply as specified in clauses 2(1), 4(3), and 6(1).
Accordingly, this product range conforms to the requirements of the national standards for connection to the network in accordance with section 22 of the 1984 Telecommunications act.
The installation and maintenance procedures in the installation and configuration guide must be followed to ensure compliance with these regulations.
Operating Conditions for Canada
In addition to the warnings and safety guidelines listed in the section "Translated Safety Warnings" later in this document, the following operating condition applies to routers used in Canada:
The Canadian Department of Communications label identifies certified equipment. This certification means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications network protective operational and safety requirements. The Department does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.
Before installing the equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the local telecommunications company. The equipment must also be installed using an acceptable method of connection. In some cases, the company's inside wiring associated with a single line individual service may be extended by means of a certified connector assembly (telephone extension cord). The customer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions may not prevent degradation of service in some situations.
Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.
Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas.

The Cisco 1600 series routers comply with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions:
The Cisco 1600 series routers comply with Part 68 of the FCC rules. On the bottom of this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, the FCC registration number. If requested, this information must be provided to the telephone company.
An FCC compliant telephone cord and modular plug is provided with this equipment, designed to be connected to the telephone network or premises wiring using a compatible modular jack which is Part 68 compliant.
This equipment cannot be used on telephone company-provided coin service. Connection to party line service is subject to state tariffs.
If this equipment causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in advance that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. If advance notice isn't practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible. Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC if you believe it is necessary.
The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations, or procedures that could affect the operation of the equipment. If this happens, the telephone company will provide advance notice in order for you to make the necessary modifications in order to maintain uninterrupted service.
If trouble is experienced with this equipment, please contact us for repair and warranty information. If the trouble is causing harm to the telephone network, the telephone company may request you remove the equipment from the network until the problem is resolved.
It is recommended that the customer install an AC surge arrestor in the AC outlet to which this device is connected. This is to avoid damaging the equipment caused by local lightening strikes and other electrical surges.

Warning The ISDN connection is regarded as a source of voltage that should be inaccessible to user contact. Do not attempt to tamper with or open any public telephone operator (PTO)-provided equipment or connection hardware. Any hardwired connection (other than by a nonremovable, connect-one-time-only plug) must be made only by PTO staff or suitably trained engineers.
