About This Guide

This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco 2518 Router/Hub User Guide. This document is available on UniverCD, Cisco's online library of product information. A printed document can be ordered separately. UniverCD is updated and shipped monthly, so it may be more up to date than the printed documentation. UniverCD is available both as a single CD and as an annual subscription. Document Objectives

This publication will step you through initial site preparation, installation, and configuration. It also covers selected maintenance procedures, such as replacing single inline memory modules (SIMMs) and Flash memory.

Audience

This publication is designed for the person installing the Cisco 2518, who should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

For a tutorial on initial software configuration, refer to the Router Products Getting Started Guide. For more advanced configuration applications, refer to the Router Products Configuration Guide and the Router Products Command Reference. Both publications are available on UniverCD or you can order printed copies.

Document Organization

The major sections of this publication are as follows:

• Chapter 1, "Overview of the Cisco 2518"---Describes the features of the hub chassis, management card, router card, hub port card, management software, and system configuration. This chapter also contains technical specifications.
  

• Chapter 2, "Preparing for Installation"---Describes the safety recommendations and general site requirements, and includes an installation checklist.
  

• Chapter 3, "Installing the Router/Hub"---Includes cabling and basic installation information for hub connections, and an overview of cascading hubs.
  

• Chapter 4, "Configuring the Router Card"---Describes how to connect and configure the router card.
  

• Chapter 5, "Network Connectivity"---Gives basic information for connecting terminals and other devices to the hub.
  

• Chapter 6, "Configuring the SNMP Agent with SPSET"---Gives configuration information for the management card SNMP manager.
  

• Appendix A, "Translated Safety Warnings"---Provides safety warnings in this guide translated into multiple languages.
  

• Appendix B, "Cisco 2518 Hub Maintenance"---Describes how to set the hub port card switches and jumper, and upgrade the management card ROMs.
  

• Appendix C, "Router Card Maintenance"---Describes the router card jumper settings, how to upgrade the Flash memory SIMM and DRAM SIMM, and gives procedures for recovering a lost password and for troubleshooting.
  

• Appendix D, "Cabling Specifications"---Lists pinout information for all cables used with the unit.

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:

Command descriptions use these conventions:

• Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
  

• Variables for which you supply values are in italic font.
  

• Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
  

• Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by a vertical bar ( | ).
  

Examples use these conventions:

• Terminal sessions are in screen font.
  

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.
  

• Nonprinting characters are shown in angle brackets (< >).
  

• Information the system displays is in screen font, with default responses in square brackets ([ ]).
