About This Manual
The 500-CS Hardware Installation and Reference manual contains installation procedures for the 500-CS communication server product. This guide will step you through the initial site preparation, installation, and startup of your new equipment. Once your hardware is installed, you will use the appropriate companion manual to configure your system (listed in the "Obtaining Additional Information" section). In the future, refer to this reference manual when you upgrade your software or add memory to your system.
Audience and Scope
Setting up and maintaining a network requires the knowledge and expertise of people with a variety of skills. In many environments, the people responsible for installing and maintaining hardware and wiring are not the ones who configure the software and administer the network. This guide provides information specifically for installing and upgrading the hardware. To use this guide, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices, and preferably have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.
Document Organization and Use
The organization of this reference follows the recommended installation sequence. The length of time it takes you to cover each chapter depends upon the type of system you are installing.
This reference also includes information that you may not need at initial installation but will be useful when upgrading or adding memory to the system. Additional reference information is included in the appendixes.
The major sections of this reference follow:
- About This Manual describes the audience and scope of this document and the document conventions used within.
- Service and Support provides warranty and support information and instructions for contacting Customer Services and the Technical Assistance Center (TAC).
- Obtaining Additional Information lists the software and configuration manuals that are the companions to this hardware guide and provides instructions for obtaining additional reference material.
- Chapter 1, 500-CS Description, describes and illustrates the physical characteristics of the 500-CS, including power requirements, interface ports, switches, and indicators.
- Chapter 2, Preinstallation, is a preparation section that describes the site considerations, tools, and other equipment you should have available before installation, and the procedures you should perform before actual installation.
- Chapter 3, Installing the 500-CS, provides step-by-step procedures for connecting devices to your server and powering it up. Troubleshooting techniques are also included for each installation step.
- Chapter 4, Maintenance, provides detailed information about installing additional dynamic memory and upgrading the system software.
- Appendix A, Operating Conditions for the U.K., provides the guidelines and agency specifications for using these products in the United Kingdom.
- Appendix B, Industry Standard Wiring Plans, lists the telephone industry color code scheme for 25-pair wires, including the pin numbers.
Document Conventions
This manual uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:
Information displayed on a terminal screen is in
Screen font

- Information you enter is in
Boldface screen
font.
- Commands and keywords are in boldface.
- Italicized type shows command variables, emphasizes new terms and concepts, and is used for titles of books and periodicals.
- Definition of string: A string is defined as a nonquoted set of characters. For example, when setting up a community string for SNMP to the word public, do not use quotes around the string or the string will be set to "public."
Note: Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
Caution: Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage, or you might have to take something apart and start over again.
Warning: Means danger. You are in a situation in which you could be injured or killed, usually by electrical shock. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and standard practices for preventing accidents.
