Installing the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter Card

System Requirements

To properly operate the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter hardware, these system requirements must be met:

• PC environment Windows NT 3.51 (or higher) with 24 MB RAM (minimum for NT 3.51) must be installed on your workstation.
  

• 2 MB additional hard disk space available for the driver package.
  

Installation Equipment

To install the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter, you need:

• A Phillips-head screwdriver.
  

• Anti-static grounding strap (shipped with each adapter card).
  

• PCI adapter installation documentation for the computer into which the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter will be installed.
  

Safety with Electricity

Observe these guidelines and safety precautions when working around electrical equipment:

Caution Locate the power source shutoff for the room where you are working. This is where you will turn OFF the power in the event of an emergency or accident. Never assume that power has been disconnected for a circuit. Always check first.

• Don't wear loose clothing. Fasten your tie or scarf, remove jewelry, and roll up your sleeves. Wear safety glasses when working under any conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
  

• Shut down the power supply to your computer before you begin work, but do not disconnect the power cord from the system power or wall socket. This connection provides the ground path necessary to safely install your Cisco ATM PCI Adapter card.
  

• Connect the anti-static ground strap to a clean unpainted metal surface of the chassis frame on your computer and secure it to your wrist or ankle, ensuring that it makes good skin contact.
  

Electrical Power Consumption

The Cisco ATM PCI Adapter card draws this amount of electrical current:

• 2 A at 5 Volts
  

Unpacking Information

This section provides instructions for safely unpacking and handling the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter.

Caution For your safety, and to avoid damaging the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter components, always attach the grounding strap before handling the adapter.

Verifying Package Contents

Each Cisco ATM PCI Adapter should arrive in good condition. Before unpacking the adapter and accessories, check for any obvious damage to the packaging and notify your carrier immediately upon receipt. Verify the package contents against the list provided below. If any item is missing or damaged contact Cisco Customer Service. See Appendix B.

Unpacking the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter

When unpacking the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter:

• Ground yourself before removing adapter from the anti-static bag.
  

• Handle the adapter by the edges and do not allow components to touch any metal parts.
  

• Store the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter in the anti-static bag until you are prepared to install it in your system.
  

• Save all packing material for return shipping, if necessary.
  

Hardware Installation

Perform these steps to insert and install the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter card:

Step 1 Shut down the power supply to your system.

Step 2 Remove the cover screws and the workstation cover. (For specific instructions see the hardware documentation that came with your computer.)

Step 3 Remove the PCI slot-cover from the slot position where you want to intall the PCI adapter.

Step 4 Connect the ground strap to a clean metal surface on the workstation and secure it to your person (e.g., attach it to your wrist or ankle).

Step 5 Remove the adapter card from the anti-static bag.

Step 6 Holding the card by the edges, insert the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter into the designated PCI slot, keeping it at a 90^o angle to the motherboard. Align the edge connectors to the slot.

Caution The warranty will be void and the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter will be damaged if an attempt is made to install the Adapter into a non-PCI slot.

Step 7 Using the slot cover screw, attach the mounting bracket of the PCI card to the casing.

Step 8 Remove the ground strap from your wrist and the workstation.

Step 9 Replace the workstation cover.

Step 10 Connect an ATM interface cable to the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter transceiver interface connector.

Step 11 Turn on the power supply to your system.

Hardware Configuration

The Cisco ATM PCI Adapter can be inserted into any bus-mastering PCI slot in the workstation. In most systems, this card is a "plug and play" device that is automatically configured when the system is powered up. There are no jumpers or switch settings to configure before inserting the adapter in the workstation.

The Cisco ATM PCI Adapter is bus-mastering and requires that the CMOS is aware of this fact. Refer to the hardware manual (re: motherboard) that came with your workstation for detailed information regarding the slots in your workstation. Verify that the desired slot has bus-mastering capabilities.

If the workstation does not automatically configure PCI-bus devices, enter the CMOS SETUP utility after inserting the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter to manually configure the slot. Enable the bus-master parameter for the slot and configure the PCI slot to INTA or assign a free IRQ number to PCI INTA.

Using the Status Indicators

After you have properly connected the Cisco ATM PCI Adapter transceiver to your network and powered on the workstation or server, confirm that you have inserted the Adapter card correctly by checking the adapter's LED indicators. Green indicates that a signal is being received while yellow indicates a frame error. Refer to Table 2-1 to identify the condition of the adapter:

LED	Status	Description
Green Yellow	On Off	The adapter is connected properly and is receiving valid SONET frames.
Green Yellow	Off On	Physical layer error detected by the SONET indicating a probable link status error. Check the connection (e.g., it may be reversed).
Green Yellow	On On	A signal is detected but an error in SONET framing is evident. Ensure that the adapter is connected to another ATM device (i.e., not FDDI or Token Ring).
Green Yellow	Off Off	The adapter is not seated properly in the slot. Power off the workstation immediately. Ensure the adapter is seated all the way into a PCI slot; if it is inserted properly contact Technical Support (refer to Appendix B).

If the green LED is lit and the yellow LED is off, the adapter installation is correct and complete.
