About This Manual
This section describes the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the CiscoWorks Administrator and Installation Guide. It also lists related Cisco, Sybase, and Sun publications.
This guide contains procedures for planning, installing, and configuring the CiscoWorks network management software; setting up the CiscoWorks environment for your system; and preparing to use CiscoWorks. It also includes exercises for learning to use some basic CiscoWorks applications, information on using CiscoWorks on the Sun Network Manager platform, sample worksheets to help you establish records of hardware and software versions, and troubleshooting guidelines.
For detailed information on using the CiscoWorks applications, refer to the CiscoWorks User Guide.
The CiscoWorks Administrator and Installation Guide is designed for the Cisco Systems user responsible for installing, configuring, and verifying CiscoWorks software. This includes network managers, operators, and system administrators who should have prior networking experience, be familiar with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), be aware of their own network topology, and be familiar with at least one window manager on the Sun platform (for example, OPEN LOOK or OSF/Motif) and the basic network management tools of SunNet Manager. Familiarity with database programs, a UNIX text editor (for example, textedit), and the basic commands used in the UNIX environment (for example, the cd command used to change directories) is helpful.
The organization of this guide reflects the order in which the tasks should be performed. Worksheets are included as planning and information-gathering tools.
Following are the major sections of this guide:
- Chapter 1, "Product Overview," provides an overview of the CiscoWorks applications.
- Chapter 2, "Preparing to Install CiscoWorks," describes the system requirements for CiscoWorks and information you should gather before installing and configuring the CiscoWorks software. This includes information for upgrading from a pervious version of CiscoWorks and installing CiscoWorks for the first time is covered. The chapter also provides installation and configuration worksheets for gathering the information.
- Chapter 3, "Installing and Configuring CiscoWorks," provides procedures for installing and configuring CiscoWorks.
- Chapter 4, "Validating CiscoWorks Installation," explains how to edit the .cshrc file to include CiscoWorks-related information, start the SNM Console, and view CiscoWorks processes.
- Chapter 5, "Learning to Use CiscoWorks," explains how to run the Discover tool, change network devices to Cisco devices, and synchronize the SNM database with the Sybase database. In addition, it provides instructions on viewing or using some basic CiscoWorks applications.
- Chapter 6, "Using CiscoWorks on SNM," discusses how CiscoWorks applications operate on the SNM platform. It also discusses the SNM features that CiscoWorks uses to display information (for example, the Grapher utility).
- Appendix A, "Error Messages," provides error messages encountered during installation and configuration. It explains the context of error message and provides solutions.
- Appendix B, "Blank Worksheets," provides blank worksheets for planning CiscoWorks installation and configuration.
