IBM LAN Manager and NetView Support

The Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS`) provides support for the LAN Network Manager (LNM) agent software needed to perform network management from IBM based consoles and/or programs.

Each Cisco 2517 and Cisco 2519 is equipped with a Network Management (NMS) Interface module. This module can be monitored by the IBM LAN Manager Version 2.0, IBM LAN Network Manager (LNM), or NetView R3.

The NMS module functions as a standard PC equipped with a standard 4/16-Mbps Token Ring adapter card. This PC communicates with IBM LAN Manager 2.0 (IBM LAN Network Manager, Ethernet card, Flash memory or MCIA interface), and NetView as an additional Token Ring/Ethernet device on the LAN.

Furthermore, by using the monitoring facility of the IBM LAN Manager, or IBM LAN Network Manager, you can define the Token Ring adapter within the NMS module as a monitored adapter. Whenever the connection between the NMS module installed in the Cisco 2517 or Cisco 2519, the IBM LAN Manager is broken (in other words, the router/hub is in the wrap condition), an alarm is generated under the IBM LAN Manager and NetView.

The NMS module communicates with IBM LAN Manager 2.0, IBM LAN Network Manager, and NetView as an additional Token Ring device on the LAN.

The PC that runs the LAN Manager should not be connected to the router/hub that it is to monitor.

To configure the NMS module as a monitored adapter, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Access the Add Adapter Definition screen.

Step 2 From the Adapter Definition List, Select A (Add).

Step 3 Enter the definition details for the router/hub.
