To use TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager to manage a Catalyst 1600 device:
TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager maintains a database of Catalyst 1600 devices. Catalyst 1600 Manager discovers devices automatically on IPX networks. On pure IP networks, add a Catalyst 1600 device by specifying the IP address. See Table 2-1.
To manage a Catalyst 1600 using SNMP over IP, give the Catalyst 1600 an IP address by using the serial interface. For information about using the serial interface, refer to the Catalyst 1600 Installation Guide.
Table 2-1 : Adding Catalyst 1600 Devices over IP or IPX
The management platform that you run determines how Catalyst 1600 devices are added to the database. For more information, refer to TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
Starting Catalyst 1600 Manager
The management platform that you run determines how you start Catalyst 1600 Manager.
In general, to manage a Catalyst 1600, either double-click on the icon representing the device or on the entry for the device in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table. For information about viewing a table of devices, refer to TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
The Catalyst 1600 icon is shown below.
You can set the password that you enter to manage a Catalyst 1600. Unless you set a password, the default password PUBLIC is used.
In some network management platforms, the color of the icon that represents the Catalyst 1600 shows whether you have read-write access to the device. For information about icon colors in the TrueView network management platform, refer to TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
The password is entered in one of two ways:
If the password is not matched when the Catalyst 1600 is added to the database, enter the password to gain read-write access to the Catalyst 1600.
To enter the password for a Catalyst 1600 that is already in the database:
You can change the password for a Catalyst 1600 if the current password is correct and you have read-write access to the device.
To change the password for a Catalyst 1600:
Configuring Catalyst 1600 Manager
You can configure the way Catalyst 1600 Manager polls devices for information, and set the default password that is used when a Catalyst 1600 is added to the database, in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Options dialog box.
To change the options for Catalyst 1600 Manager:
The options that you can set are described in Table 2-2.

Protocol
Method
SNMP over IP
Specify the IP address of each Catalyst 1600.
SNMP over IPX
Enable Auto discovery to make Catalyst 1600 Manager add Catalyst 1600 devices to the database automatically.
During Auto discovery, the management station advertises itself as a server, and Catalyst 1600 devices that are running agent microcode register as clients.
When a device is added by Auto discovery, Catalyst 1600 Manager obtains its IP address and compares it with the addresses of previously discovered devices to ensure that there are no duplicate entries in the database.
Option
Description
Object labels
Determines whether Catalyst 1600 icons are labelled with the name or address of the device. If you select the Address option button the IP address is displayed, unless it is 0.0.0.0 in which case the node address is displayed.
For more information, refer to TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
Miscellaneous
Determines whether Auto discovery adds devices on IPX networks, and whether icons are shown in the network management platform.
For more information, refer to TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
Timeout
The number of seconds that Catalyst 1600 Manager waits for a request to be executed.
Retries
The number of times that Catalyst 1600 Manager retries a request that times out.
Default password
The default password that Catalyst 1600 Manager uses when a Catalyst 1600 is added to the database.
If the default password matches the password that you set for the Catalyst 1600, Catalyst 1600 Manager stores the password for the Catalyst 1600 and you do not need to enter the password to manage the Catalyst 1600 in future.
