This chapter describes how to configure the TrueView management station.

Increasing the Number of Available Files

If TrueView displays error messages related to file access, you may need to increase the number of available files.

Edit the CONFIG.SYS file to include the line:

FILES=<n>

where <n> is the number of files required.

Restart the computer, Windows, and TrueView for this parameter change to take effect.

Configuring LLC SAPs and Link Stations

If you use a logical link control (LLC) interface to manage devices over internet packet exchange Internet Packet Exchange (IPX) and Internet Protocol (IP) protocols, configure the following parameters on the management station:

8 or more SAPs
30 or more link stations

If errors occur when you run management applications, increase the available service access points (SAPs) and link stations. For information about configuring LLC SAPs and link stations, refer to the documentation supplied with your network adapter card.

Managing Devices over IP or IPX

TrueView management applications can manage devices on the network using either IP or IPX. To manage devices over IPX only, load an IPX interface.

To manage devices over IPX and IP over a LLC interface, configure the management station as follows:

Step 1 Load an LLC interface.

Step 2 If you normally use IPX on the network, load an IPX interface.

Step 3 Remove any IP protocols that are running on the management station.

Step 4 Add the following line to the trueview.ini file in the TrueView directory, where ip address is the IP address of the TrueView management station.

Do not run TrueView over a Microsoft DLC (MSDLC) interface. If you use an MSDLC interface, you may experience problems when managing more than one or two devices on the network.

Installing Network Interfaces

TrueView uses IPX and LLC network interfaces to manage devices on the network, depending on the devices being managed and the protocols used on the network.

IBM Adapters with IPX and LLC Interfaces

To run an LLC interface on IBM Token-Ring Adapters, load the DXMA0MOD.SYS and DXMC0MOD.SYS drivers in CONFIG.SYS.

If you require an IPX interface, create an IPX driver. For instructions about how to create an IPX driver, refer to the documentation supplied with Novell NetWare. If you only require an IPX interface, create a `direct' IPX interface. If you require both LLC and IPX interfaces, create an `LSP' IPX interface, and load this after loading DXMA0MOD.SYS and DXMC0MOD.SYS.

Freeing Memory

DOS memory is memory that is below 640Kbytes. Each application you use in Windows requires some DOS memory. In addition, Windows network drivers also need DOS memory. Because TrueView comprises a network driver, the application requires DOS memory.

If there is insufficient free DOS memory to start TrueView, check that you have not loaded any large DOS TSR (Terminate-and-Stay-Resident) programs before starting Windows.

If this does not help:

Check whether there are any other applications in use that are not currently needed and shut them down.
Check for any device drivers loaded from SYSTEM.INI that may require DOS memory.
Configure Windows to use a temporary or permanent swap file for virtual memory. This enables Windows to swap information from memory to a hidden file to increase the amount of virtual memory that is available for use by applications. If Windows is already using virtual memory, make more free disk space available and increase the size of the swap file.

In Windows version 3.1 and later, you can configure virtual memory by starting Control Panel from Program Manager, and clicking on the 386 Enhanced icon.
