Network Operating System Configuration
CiscoRemote supports Remote Node Access to both Novell Netware and a variety of Microsoft Windows Networking systems, including Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows NT, and LAN Manager. There are some additional requirements for proper installation and configuration of CiscoRemote for operation as a remote node to these networks. The following instructions provide an overview of what is required.
During installation you are offered the opportunity to select Microsoft Windows Network Support if your PC is running Windows for Workgroups. If you wish to use this support, then you must select the TCP/IP Protocol Stack. Selecting these options, TCP/IP Protocol Stack and Microsoft Windows Networking Support, will install the components of CiscoRemote that will permit it to work with these networks.
This option enables Windows Networking to use the remote connection to access file and print servers on your company's network. When this option is selected, the installer loads a VxD version of the TCP/IP stack. If Windows Networking is NOT already enabled when you install CiscoRemote, you must use the Microsoft Network Setup program to Add the CiscoRemote PPP/SLIP driver and the TCP/IP protocol stack to your WIndows Network configuration.
If you are running Windows 3.1x on your PC you will be offered the opportunity to install support for Microsoft LAN Manager remote access. If you wish to use this support then you must select the TCP/IP Protocol Stack and the Microsoft LAN Manager options.
Selecting these enables LAN Manager to use the remote connection to access file and print servers on your company's network. When this option is selected, the installer loads a real-mode TSR version of the TCP/IP stack. The TSR stack requires about 87K bytes of conventional memory. Note that if LAN Manager is not running when you install CiscoRemote you MUST cancel the CiscoRemote Installation and install LAN Manager before continuing. Check with you Network Administrator for details of how to do this installation.
During the installation of CiscoRemote you are offered the opportunity to install support for Novell Netware remote access. If you wish to use this support then you must select the Novell support option. You can also select the TCP/IP Protocol Stack support for Internet support and/or support for Microsoft Windows Networking.
Selecting this option will allow your PC to have access to remote Novell Netware networks. However, if you do not already have Netware running at the time you install CiscoRemote, selecting this option will bring up additional instructions on your screen. You can have CiscoRemote install the Netware 4.0 client (included), you can install your own version of Netware before installing CiscoRemote (if it is version 3.12 or later), or you can install your own version of Netware with assistance of CiscoRemote (if your Netware is earlier than 3.12).
You can not have simultaneous direct LAN and remote access to Netware servers. Refer to the next section for information about switching between local and remote access.
Novell LAN and remote support can not be simultaneously supported with the Novell ODI interface implementation. In order to switch between remote and LAN support you must modify the STARTNET.BAT file. Examples of this file are shown for both Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups.
