Cisco Multimedia FastPAD Product Family

Product Overview

The Multimedia FastPAD products are Frame Relay access devices (FRADs) that provide voice and data integration and local Frame Relay switching over Frame Relay or leased line networks. The Multimedia FastPAD products provide efficient use of bandwidth by using Frame Relay as the trunk protocol and by using a high-quality voice compression algorithm, Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction (ACELP), which uses 1/6 of the actual bandwidth used with normal pulse code modulation voice lines.

In addition to these features, the Multimedia FastPAD products integrate with IPX and IGX backbone switch products. When you connect a FastPAD to an IPX or IGX through a FastPAD trunk card (IPX/FTC, IGX/FTM), you obtain many benefits of a flat network architecture, such as the following:

StrataView Plus network management and configuration
Frame Relay connection management
FrameClass (provides guaranteed quality of service through the network)
Frame Relay interworking with the IPX/IGX (Frame Relay equipment connected to the FastPAD can terminate directly on a Frame Relay port on the switch.)

FastPAD

FastPAD includes the following standard features:

Eight card slots for voice/FAX expansion interfaces or the Frame Relay access module
Six data ports on the base unit (five low-speed V.24 ports and one high-speed synchronous port with V.24 standard configuration)

Configuration Tools

You can configure the Multimedia FastPAD products with the following:

Front panel

: The front panel of the Multimedia FastPAD can be used to operate either a local or remote FastPAD. A remote FastPAD can be configured via the front panel of a remote FastPAD only if there is a valid network connection between the two.

StrataView Plus

: StrataView Plus, and the terminal interface on the IGX, can be used to configure any FastPAD that is connected to an IGX switch via the FastPAD trunk module. The integration features of the IGX-FastPAD combination give network managers the convenience of configuring the entire network, end-to-end, from one management station.

St rataView FastPAD

: StrataView FastPAD is a configuration tool that operates over Windows 3.1. It is used to configure and upgrade a FastPAD. StrataView FastPAD can be used with a modem to dial into a remote FastPAD for configuration and operation in case a network fails. StrataView FastPAD is strongly recommended if the FastPAD is used on a public Frame Relay service.

Expansion Boards

The following sections describe the Voice/FAX interface card and the Frame Relay access module.

Voice/FAX Interface Card

The Voice/FAX interface card is an analog voice card that supports a single E & M, FXS, or FXO connection. The PCM voice signal is compressed using a high-quality 4.8-kbps or 8-kbps ACELP algorithm. The Voice/FAX interface card also supports Group III FAX at 2.4, 4.8, 7.2, and 9.6 kbps. Each interface card uses one of the expansion slots in the FastPAD or FastPAD Micro chassis.

Frame Relay Access Module

The Frame Relay access module (FRAM) is a three-channel data interface that supports Frame Relay, HDLC, or SDLC connections at data rates up to 512 kbps. Physically the module has a single, high-density connector with the three individual channels accessed through an included triplex cable. You can use one of the ports on the card as the trunk port for increased trunk speeds to 512 kbps. Only one Frame Relay access module can be installed in a FastPAD. You can configure each of the ports for EIA/TIA-232 (standard), V.11, V.35, or EIA/TIA-449 (DTE or DCE) through the use of an expansion daughter board kit.

Note EIA/TIA-232 was known as recommended standard RS-232 before its acceptance as standard by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) and Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).

When you use one of the Frame Relay access module ports as the trunk, the composite port on the base unit is disabled. When you configure a channel on the module as a Frame Relay switch port, the channel functions as an integrated Frame Relay switch that includes the following features:
