Cisco Multiprotocol FastPAD Product Family

Cisco Multiprotocol FastPAD Product Family

Product Overview

The Multiprotocol FastPAD product family is a series of high-powered, switching Frame Relay access devices (FRADs) that can be used for FRAD applications, Frame Relay switching, X.25 switching, and X.25 PAD applications. Built on X.25 and Frame Relay switching engines, these products are ideally suited for projects that require both X.25 and Frame Relay. They are software configurable and can readily be changed between X.25 to Frame Relay modes. Additionally, the Multiprotocol FastPAD products offer high port densities and can be configured into nodes of up to 108 ports.

The Multiprotocol FastPAD products use a flexible connector-and-cable interface system that allows many different connections on the same module, such as V.24/V.28, V.11, V.35, and X.21. ISDN terminal adapters and G.703 adapters are also available.

Figure 8-27 through Figure 8-29 show the Multiprotocol FastPAD products.

FastPADmp6

The FastPADmp6 is designed for remote office applications. The FastPADmp6 offers three low-speed data ports (V.24/V.28), two high-speed data ports (V.24/V.28 or V.11), and one multipurpose high-speed trunk port (V.35 standard). This product is designed to fit applications where low cost and high performance are driving factors. The FastPADmp6 differs from the other products in the Multiprotocol FastPAD family in that its operating protocols are loaded at the factory. It is available with three different software options for different network requirements.

FastPADmp

The FastPADmp is a moderately powered unit with 12 physical lines that can be configured with V.24/V.28, V.11, or V.35 interfaces. You can configure each of the 12 lines as either a trunk or port. The module uses a PCMCIA-style SmartCard to store configuration and software license data. If a module fails, you can move the SmartCard to a new unit, and the original configuration is immediately loaded into the new unit. This results in quicker replacement and increased network uptime. Both standalone and rack-mount options are available.

FastPADmp12

The FastPADmp12 is the highest powered unit in the Multiprotocol FastPAD family. Its physical modules function as the basis of the FastPADmpr12/24. The FastPADmp12 operation and configuration are similar to that of the FastPADmp.

Each FastPADmp12 contains a high-speed transputer processor. This processor allows FastPADmp12 modules to be grouped into clusters of up to nine modules that can function logically as one. The transputer lets network managers easily scale up their networks as requirements grow. Switching power is aggregated with each new unit added. The parallel nature of the transputer eliminates the need for hierarchical connections among several modules. The FastPADmp12 is available in both standalone and rack-mount configurations.

FastPADmpr12 and FastPADmpr24

The FastPADmpr12 and FastPADmpr24 provide automatic hardware redundancy on a per-module basis. Using a special backplane and integrated Y-circuitry, the FastPADmpr12/24 can provide either one-to-one or one-to-two redundancy. If a module fails, the FastPADmpr12/24 automatically switches connections from the failed modules to the working modules. The FastPADmpr12/24 is available only in a rack-mount configuration.

Standard Features

The Multiprotocol FastPAD products include the following standard features:

Automatic Line Backup

The Multiprotocol FastPAD product family provides a flexible line backup feature. You can configure the Multiprotocol FastPAD products for backup using multiple trunks of either Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or ISDN networks. There are two modes you can use when backing up over a PSTN or ISDN network--mode one and mode two.

Figure 8-31: ISDN Backup Configuration--Mode Two

Multiprotocol Support

The FastPAD multiprotocol products offer FRAD support for the following protocols:

The following services are also provided:

Frame Relay Support

The Multiprotocol FastPAD products meet all CCITT Q.933 Annex A and ANSI T1.617 Annex D standards. The following Frame Relay operating modes are supported:

X.25 Support

The Multiprotocol FastPAD products meet all CCITT 1984 and 1988 standards and include extensive X.25 switching facilities. All Multiprotocol FastPAD products offer the following X.25 user facilities:

ISDN Support

All FastPAD products support ISDN BRI connections for use as a trunk backup. The S0 interface meets CCITT requirements (I430-I431, I440-I441, I450-I451). Connections from FastPADmp to FastPADmp can use 1B+D, 2B+D, or D only. The signaling channel can be used for data. FastPADmp-to-IGX connections are limited to 1B+D or 2B+D. Currently, only European ISDN standards are supported.

ISDN connections are achieved by use of a special ISDN interface card and an S0 interface, which attaches to two of the external EIA/TIA-232 connectors. Only one of the external connectors is used for data throughput; the other is used only for mechanical stability. Although only two EIA/TIA-232 hardware ports are connected, a third is used internally to support the second B connection; its EIA/TIA-232 connection cannot be used.

Note EIA/TIA-232 was known as recommended standard RS-232 before its acceptance as standard by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) and Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).

Hardware

There are two types of motherboards in the Multiprotocol FastPAD products. The most common is the motherboard used in the FastPADmp, FastPADmp12, FastPADmpr12, and FastPADmpr24. This board consists of a main card with four MC68302 microprocessors, AC-to-DC conversion circuitry, slots for 12 interface cards, and one slot for the SmartCard.

The second motherboard is used in the FastPADmp6. This board consists of a main card with two MC68302 microprocessors, AC-to-DC conversion circuitry, and one slot for an interface card. Because there is no SmartCard on the FastPADmp6, software licenses can only be configured at the factory.

lnterface Cards and Cables

The FastPADmp products use interface cards (Icards) that are inserted into slots on the motherboard to change the electrical specifications of the port. You can insert the interface card so the port is either DCE or DTE. If DTE faces up, the card is configured for DTE. If DCE faces up, the card is configured for DCE. Figure 8-32 shows an Icard-V28.

Figure 8-32: Icard-V28

The FastPADmp comes with 12 Icard-V28 cards already installed. To add other interfaces, you must order the proper Icard and cable combination. For example, to construct a V.35 interface, you install an Icard-V35 in the FastPADmp and attach a cable-V35 to the corresponding DB-25 connector. One end of the cable has a V.35 male connector and the other has a DB-25 male connector, which attaches to the FastPADmp. Table 8-41 lists the cable and Icard configurations needed to construct various interfaces.

Software

Software for the FastPADmp, FastPADmp12, FastPADmpr12, and FastPADmpr24 is modular. You must order system software that provides Frame Relay trunk, X.25, asynchronous, and automatic backup capabilities. Additional functions are sold separately and require individual licenses. Each additional license supports 12 lines. Consequently, when ordering a FastPADmp12 rack with three modules, you must order three FastPADmp system software licenses and three of any additional licenses.

The FastPADmpr12 and FastPADmpr24, because of special redundant software, require special system software and software licenses. Additionally, a FastPADmpr12 and FastPADmpr24 require a license for each module present in the rack. Therefore, a FastPADmpr24 with three modules requires three system software licenses and three of any additional licenses.

The software for the FastPADmp6 is bundled into three value packages described by the level 1, level 2, and level 3 user rights (see the "Product Numbers" section later in this chapter).
