About This Guide

This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco 700 Series Router Installation Guide.

Cisco documentation and literature are available in a CD-ROM package that ships with your Cisco 700 series router. The CD-ROM includes the Cisco 700 Series Command Reference. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it may be more up to date than the printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com or http://www-europe.cisco.com.

Document Objectives

This publication guides you through the site preparation, installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of Cisco 700 series routers.

Audience

This publication is designed for a person experienced with electronic circuitry, wiring practices, and network protocols.

This publication is used in conjunction with the Cisco 700 Series Command Reference (on the Documentation CD-ROM). The Cisco 700 Series Command Reference includes complete explanations of the software commands used with Cisco 700 series routers and intermediate configuration examples.

Document Organization

The major sections of this publication are as follows:

• Chapter 1, "Overview of Cisco 700 Series Routers," contains an overview of the Cisco 700 series router feature set and the physical specifications.

• Chapter 2, "Preparing a Cisco 700 Series Router for Installation," contains safety recommendations, connection preparations, and console and auxiliary port cable connection considerations.

• Chapter 3, "Basic Configurations," contains step-by-step instructions for configuring Cisco 700 series routers to operate with other routers in various routing environments.

• Chapter 4, "ISDN and Analog Telephone Devices," contains instructions on how to configure the router for use with an analog telephone device, including how to make data calls over voice lines and how to use call waiting and call hold.

• Chapter 5, "Troubleshooting Cisco 700 Series Routers," contains instructions on troubleshooting any problems that might occur with Cisco 700 series routers. In addition, it lists and describes Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) cause values and cause messages that the ISDN switch might send to the router to indicate ISDN call status.

• Chapter 6, "Adding Dynamic Random Access Memory," contains instructions on how to add DRAM to Cisco 700 series routers.

• Appendix A, "Provisioning the ISDN BRI Line for Cisco 700 Series Routers," describes how to order and configure the ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) line correctly to operate with Cisco 700 series routers.

• Appendix B, "Cabling Specifications and Common Port Assignments," contains pinouts for cables used with Cisco 700 series routers and lists currently used Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port assignments.

• Appendix C, "Configuring Termination for Cisco 700 Series Routers," describes how to configure router termination for Cisco 700 series routers.
